Both of my kids (3 years old) have had a cold for the past two weeks. My DD in particular has been coughing a lot, for these past two weeks. I'm pretty sure it's just a cold. She did have a slight fever last week for one day, but other than that her temp has been normal. She's eating and sleeping fine. But she's still coughing and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Would you call the pedi?

    thanks,

Thea, I probably would call. Only because I wouldn't want it to be something else and I'm only delaying her getting better. Go with your gut Momma.

Yes, if it has been going on that long, I would call the Ped.

    Liz,
Thanks for your response. I hate to bother them (at the pedi office), but I guess that's what they are there for.

Maybe. But I took my son to the doctor's last summer because of a lingering cough. He'd been coughing for a month. The doctor told me that coughs can really persist in young children and that they're not problematic unless they're accompanied by wheezing or breathing difficulties. She sent me home with no particular instructions and told me not to worry. She was right!

:acute: If we moms don't bother them, they'll be bored!

Yeah, I would. My DD had a cough for 2 weeks a while back and I was hesitant to call b/c it wasn't that bad. But I did take her in and she had a sinus infection which needed antibiotics. Better safe!

If the cough hang around that lenght of time here, it is "normally" an ear infection.

Yes, I would take her in. Ds had a cough for a few months last fall into winter but that was all it was, no fever, runny nose, or anything and it didn't bother him in the least. When I finally took him in, he had pneumonia. My ped said to take them in after 10 days of coughing.

We went thru pnemonia due to a cough that wouldn't go away. I'd take them in

We just went through this last week with DD. She did have a fever that wouldn't break along with the cough. Sure enough she ended up being diagnosed with pneumonia. I would definitely call.

Just checking if you called, and what came of it. And if they are feeling better yet?

I just took my kids on Monday b/c DS had been coughing for about 6 or 7 days, and its a wet chest cough. 3 of them had walking pnemonia back in Jan. So I wanted to get it checked asap. DD started coughing like 2 days before I took them but she had a fever that morning. So, anyway the DR said they are fine, must just be a virus. I thought DS might have been getting better b/c he wasnt coughing AS MUCH. . but he still has a lot of congestion in his chest that I can hear when he's coughing.
If its been 2 weeks I would definitely take them in. My kids had no symptoms when they had walking pnemonia (other than the cough) . . although the doc said the first symptom would be a loss of appetite. Mine didnt stop eating.

    Hi,
Original poster here; thanks for everyone's response. I did call and I spoke with the advice nurse. She basically told me that unless my DD had other symptoms, like a fever or a sore throat, or unless her cough was getting worse, I did not need to bring her in. The nurse said I should just "monitor" the cough, so I've been doing that. I do think her cough is slowly getting better, but if she still has it next week I'm bringing her in even if the nurse doesn't think we need to come in. Thanks for all your feedback!

Remember to trust your instincts, just as you did!! I'm glad they aren't that concerned and that you are thinking it's getting better!
