One of my 17-month old daughters has been coughing at night in her sleep for the past 2 weeks. It is a dry cough. Every time I go in to pick her up and make sure that she is okay, she is still "asleep" and not feverish. I usually try to give her a sip of water and just hold her for a little while and put her back down. It's almost like she doesn't really wake up fully during these episodes. I mentioned this to her pedi at the last appt. and he said that it could be asthma, but that there is really nothing that we can do except wait and see if it gets better or worse.

Anyone have any experience with night coughing or asthma??

    Thanks

Could def be asthma. I was just reading that asthmatics tend to cough the most between the hours of 12-4am. My son is on inhalers at night and he doesn't cough at all anymore. I was told it could be post nasal drip, reflux or asthma. But the inhalers have done the trick so I am assuming it must be some airway issue. Have you taken him to a pulmonologist?

I had the same concern about one of my girls as well. I brought it up to our pedi at our 3 year check up. He told me to listen for a wheezing sound. He said if I didn't hear it, then it's probably allergies (post nasal drip). I've been listening and haven't heard her sounding like she's having breathing issues, just a dry cough at times. Not sure if that's completely true or not, but I thought I'd let you know what I was told. HTH.

both of mine do that, but the air hear is really dry with the heater going now. I'm watching them closely because my husband and I both have asthma.

want I been told and what we have experienced with this that it is congestion and when you lay down it rolls down the throat and causes coughing.... Ive been told to put a humidfier in the room, evate the head of the matress with a pillow or blanket under it and put vics on there feet and taht seems to help also if it gets bad take them in the cool night air or steamy bathroom.... it they dont cough and it just sits in the lungs it will cause namonia (sp?) so as bad as it sounds its good that they cough....

    good luck

it's probably allergies, it could be asthma but w/o any other symptoms, it's likely allergies.
Can you put a humidifier in the room to see if that helps?
I have a dry cough roghty now and so does Beau. Beau IS asthmatic but I know it's not his asthma, we both have allergies right now.

My oldest DS never had a wheeze but our Dr. said how it still can be a form of asthma. Actually, at first they kept saying it was croup and after years of trying to figure things out, we got a DX. He actually has outgrown and has very little problems now. We always have inhalers on hand for the 1 or times a year of a flare up.
