my LOs are 25 months but i was intrigued to know what the next step is.
we have convertible cribs - they convert into a daybed i guess?? (the front of the crib comes off, then a full-sized bed.

when do you transition them into the daybed?

I think for most people they transition when the kids start to climb out which can be dangerous. One of mine did and the other never tried. We put a crib tent on until recently when we felt they (and us) were ready to transition them.

We actually never converted them... They were too high off the floor for me to be comfortable with it. We switched to twin mattresses when they climbed out (3 weeks before they turned 3).

We moved them into the toddler beds at 2 days before their 3rd birthday. :) They never tried to climb out, so it was never an issue. We were thinking of just converting it to the full sized bed, but getting two full sized mattresses/boxsprings, just wasn't in the cards for us. They are perfectly content in their toddler beds. :)

Mine just crawled out of their cribs 2 days ago and we just put the matresses on the floor for now to get them used to the idea of sleeping on a bed without restraints around them. My husband wanted to convert their cribs and put up the toddler rail but we have laminate floor in their room and Miles had a bad fall out of our bed not too long ago, so I wasn't comfortable with that yet. So far they seem to be doing just fine on their matresses, although we do hear the occasional thud. When I think they've got the hang of it I'll put the convertible cribs back up into a daybed, or I will just get some inexpensive kid beds from Ikea; haven't decided yet.

We converted last year at 24 mo. but gave up when the kids wouldn't settle down for naps or bedtime... I tried for over 5 wks. it was disastrous for us. we put crib tents up. finally at 2 yrs 10 mo. my ds kept hanging and everything on the crib tent and it was dangerous... so we converted him. my dd just got converted last week... though truthfully she'd been crawling in and out for a while too... mine should be gymnists with all the things they do!

anyway, as for them falling out... we have the partial rail, and for the most part it keeps them in. they did "thud" one or 2 times each at 24 mo. but after that they never fell out again. I don't think they've fallen out now at 3 yrs either.

BUT... one thing to think about... the 3 sides of the cribs/converted beds are TALL!! My monkeys climb up to that sometimes... had I have known about that I might not have converted the cribs. might have just put mattresses on the floor... anyway, toddler beds are nice and short and you wouldn't have that issue.

good luck. for us it's not really an easy transition since now they aren't "confined" and sleep doesn't come as easy... they find any little thing to keep their minds awake... even like peeling paint off the walls & baseboards!
