Ok Jacob is constipated. Hard poops and not much of them. What do I do? See ticker for age. He gets cereal once a day and I have been giving him apples or pears for the past 4 days to try to help loosen things up. He is now being formula fed.

Have you tried mixing some prunes, or prune juice in with his cereal? You can also give him an ounce or two of water during the day. That is what my pedi told me to do. The prunes work like a charm for mine. [IMG]

My ped recommended 1 oz pear juice + 1 oz of water. That helped a little.

My ped then suggested to switch from rice cereal to oatmeal, and that did the trick!

DD Charlotte has been constipated on and off since starting solids. The thing that works best for her is giving her 1/2 teaspoon flax oil per day. You can give it in her cereal or with an oral syringe. The flax oil is healthy too.

PRUNES Melissa, PRUNES!!!! They work like a charm. If you can get him to eat them alone then start out with half, otherwise, if you give him cereal, mix the stage one container right in there and let the magic happen!!!

I second double-or-nothing's post - PRUNES. Both ours were constipated just a couple weeks ago and I put 1 tbsp in each of their morning bottles. By midday, we had some pretty gross diapers, but they weren't constipated anymore. Also, we started giving them oatmeal with their fruit in the morning instead of rice cereal, only saving that for dinner mixed with veggies rather than twice a day previously.

Our Gi doc said to give them 1ML of Milk of Magnesia as needed, but I have had tje best luck with 1oz of prune juice per day(per pedi). Works almost instantly for a good cleanout!!! [IMG]

Apples are constipating ... pears, peas ... usually work, and if you are ff ... a 24 hour soy milk formula usually helps really well too. And of course ... prunes, like pp's said.

Rice cereal is constipating. Try oatmeal instead.
