Josie hasn't pooped in 48 hours. She's never been constipated before, so I'm not sure what to do. I gave her 2 oz of prune & apple juice mixed with 2 oz of water. I gave it a couple of hours - nothing. So then I tried prune baby food. This was at about 4:30 and no poop yet. Anything else I should try?

apple prune juice does not work for my boys. I am actually calling the dr. tomorrow because my boys are always having constipation issues!

Just because they haven't pooped in 48 hours doesn't mean they are constipated. However do they act like they need to go and can't and are cranky. If they are acting normal and happy i wouldn't worry about it. Just wait when they do go it could be an explosion and many take two diaper changes.

My dd2 is 6 weeks old and is getting constipated from the formula - we are giving her apple prune juice 1 oz twice a day and that seems to keep her regular. ds is breastfed - i want to start pumping again for dd2 i had how the formula is so harsh on the system. I stopped due to mastitis and so many stressfully things going on in my life.

I don't know what kind of foods you are feeding them but my oldest daughter loves brocolii and the next morning she has a fully loaded stinky diaper. I know it is a gassy food but it might make 'em poop

Juice and prunes take a while to work, wait until tomorrow before getting too worried! If you keep feeding her prunes and juice she's going to have a diaper explosion!

I would try feeding her solid prunes. Whenever I give my girls the prune baby food by Gerber they always go. I also put a teaspoon of Karo syrup in their bottles. But the tried and true remedy is taking their temperature rectally - this stimulates the sphincter muscles.....

Try Fleet BabyLax - small glycerin capsules, that you squeeze in to the baby's anus and she'll poop in 5-10 min. after 100%. Sometimes there's something so big and hard, that she will intentionally try to keep it in. Baby lax stimulates her, so she won't be able to fight it anymore, also it lubricates, and makes everything less painful. Good luck!

When my son was constipated from rice Cereal, the pedi said to: give him 2-6 oz of water a day; stay away from bananas and apples; and use juice only if you have to because it is like candy to babies. The NICU had it best though: stick a rectal thermoter in a dab of petrolium jelly, then stick 1/4 - 1/2" in their bum. It works EVERY time withing a few hours. Like magic!

Have you tried putting them in the exersaucer? Mine almost always poop in those or the bumbo seats. Maybe the combo of juice plus stimulation will get them to go....

We've had problems with Zoe being constipated from the beginning. Even so bad that it was "stuck" and I had to pull it out for her.....long story. [IMG]

You actually want to avoid the apples, bananas, rice stuff. Like the BRAT diet they give you when they've got diahrea, you don't want that. I wouldn't worry after 48 hrs, that isn't too long. But you know her habits & if that's unusual for her it won't hurt to help her along.

Zoe didn't seem to respond to the prunes very well, but pears worked better. I was also told a tiny bit of Karo syrup mixed with water, but it didn't work for us, either. You can get pediatric glycerin suppositories at the pharmacy.....they were still too big for Zoe, so I took a kitchen knife & kind of whittled them down a little. Extra water is also good, and sometimes a warm bath just to relax them can get things "moving".

These days, I just watch very closely what she eats. I also switched her formula - instead of powdered we get the concentrate now & that seemed to help a lot.

Gerber Pears work a little for us and the Gerber Prunes mixed with Apples work a lot! We had all kinds of poop last week with the prunes. I didn't know my guys were really constipated until I talked to the Pedi last week at their 9mos appt. We had a discussion that went something like this:

Pedi, "So how are the boy's poops?"

Me, " Pretty good I guess we have had some Pellets but mostly Patties"

Pedi, "Oh well Patties aren't really good either. That also means some constipation."

Me, "Oh, Ok I thought Patties were ok but Pellets were bad so what do I want?"

Pedi, " You want Pudding so get the boys some prunes or pears"

Me, "Ok I will try that"

Now what is up with all of the P's???? Pellets, Patties and Pudding

Anyway, my story does have a point [IMG] The Prunes worked like a charm for us!

One of my DD has had constipation issues as well...probably from her vitamins and iron supps. Anyway, we tried rectal stimulation...didn't work. We tried Karo syrup...didn't work. Then, we tried prune juice and it REALLY worked, to the point where I was worried she may get dehydrated if she went poo another time. Anyway, we gave her 2oz of prune juice w/ one oz water 2x that day (suggested by pedi)...she didn't poo till the middle of the night. I think that "dosage" was way too much for her body (she was ~6lbs), so the next time I only gave her one oz prune juice total 1x that day and it still worked for her. However, it wasn't immediate...it took as much as 8 hours or more...but, it worked!!

    Good luck.

One of my guys was constipated after we went to Australia for 6 weeks and I had to change formula. I put him on the baby superfood diet (the book by Ruth Yaron). Specifically the baby super porridge. I made it with brown rice, kale, banana and lentils. It worked like a treat! I'm thinking of eating it.
