constipation from soy!

my one has really bad constipation from soy..could this be? and, what do you take???

 

Me too!!! Between the soy and reflux meds she is miserable. When she goes it's a painful thing and it's not much that comes out. What does cone is solid!! Help and advice please.

 

I've seen that soy can cause constipation. Have you mentioned it to the pedi in case there is an allergy? I'm guessing they can't do milk based formula? Sometimes kids can have allergies to both the milk based and the soy, so maybe something to look into.

I don't know how old they are, but maybe a small amount of apple juice or prune juice to move things along. I've also seen Karo syrup mentioned, or some water. I would definitely call the pediatrician and hopefully they can give you some help! Good luck!

 

One of the many reasons I hate soy! If you switched to soy because of gassiness or fussiness (and not an allergy), then you might want to try lactose free instead. You could also try Good Start. It has probiotics in it that help with the gassy/fussy issues as well as constipation. My kids were mostly on breast milk but we played around with formulas to supplement with so I've tried most of them. I'm pretty anti-soy though because a)babies are not meant to take in plant based proteins, b)the calcium and phosphorus aren't as readily absorbed from soy which puts little girls at risk for osteoporosis when they are older c)there is some evidence that soy proteins can interfere with natural hormone development

If you must stay on soy, then prune juice is the best way to help the stools soften. We used 1-2 oz straight juice every 1-3 days.
