Constipated

Anthony has been constipated since about last Thursday. He isn't a big pooper to begin with (once every 2 days) and it is usually like tare and is dark green. Nothing has changed in his formula but as of last week.. he has been screaming to get it out & only a little bit comes out & it's like a rock. I called the pedi and was told to give him 2oz. of applejuice twice daily. It worked for about 2 days & then come Monday.. it stopped. I think since then he pooped maybe once but very little. It doesn't seem to bother him as much but I can't help but think that not pooping obviously isn't healthy..


Any suggestions? I was told prune juice but I know that makes the baby massively diahrea (sp?) & then the old bath trick. anything legit? Thanks in advance!

 

My twins both have some constipation. They will go 2 sometimes 3 days between poops. The pediatrician told us to give them white grape juice no more than 2 oz twice daily (diluted with water 50/50). It seems to help them for a brief period.

 

q-tips and vaseline always does the trick for us! You dip the q-tip in vaseline and insert into the rectum and make figure 8's, they will poop within seconds...its amazing!! It makes for very happy babies. My pedi also told us we could dilute apple juice 50/50 and give them no more than 2oz a day. I like the q-tip method better though because then they are not getting wasted calories. HTH!

We tried the juice, and then the Kayro syrup in their breast milk, and then we had to do the suppositories...they worked quickly and smoothly.

It is hard not to get poop obsessed with our little ones. Constipation at your age looks like a "tootsie" roll. Likely the apple juice emptied out his bowels. Every two days is good I often put their poop days on the calendar and didn't really get concerned until about 5 days. Then I would give them a small amount of water and corn syrup basically like the apple juice it is sugar and water. It pulls water into the bowels to help with a bowel movement. You could offer him some water to increase his water content in his diet.

Also you can move their legs around like they are riding a bike, take them in the bathtub with you and get their legs kicking, also you can massage his tummy in a CLOCKWISE direction -- circles. Goodluck with your little guy.

Do NOT use a thermometer as this can perforate the rectum.

I am totally poop obsessed! You can give plain water which will help or you can do prune juice, apple juice or pear juice, but they have some sugar in them. Also the qtip trick definitely works.

Our pedi told us to use apple/prune juice or pear juice diluted 50/50 with water. The apple/prune did the trick for Jake. I think since it was not straight prune juice it was easier on him.

 

What is the temperature where you are ? Is he overheating and using up more water from his formula diet ?

I'd ask your Pedi about the Q-tip trick, my concern would me mom's who put it in too far and do some damage.

You could try these old fashion remedies, they worked for my boys. Warm some Olive oil and rub on his tummy. Also give them some warm water to drink. My boys pooped pretty much within an hour or so.
