my 3 week old boys are on zantac for reflux and i give them mylicon for gas when the get gassy and won't burp/pass gas and i have noticed that since yesterday one of my little guys is grunting and squishing up his body a lot trying to poop but nothing happens. in both of them i have only gotten wet diapers in almost 24 hours. i suspect they are constipated. so what should i do? stop the zantac and hope they poop and their reflux doesn't get worse or stop using mylicon for gas problems or both?

    thanks!

they may not be constipated. are they in pain when they try to go? if so, then i would say they are constipated. they could just be trying to pass gas since you are giving them the drops. a lot of babies that little will go days and days without pooping. it's quite normal.

If it's only been 24 hours, I wouldn't worry too much! And I wouldn't stop either the Zantac or Mylicon.. If they don't have a BM with in 4 or 5 days, then contact your pedi for other options. But since they are getting Mylicon, they are probably just trying to pass gas!!

My boys were pretty constipated around a month old and we ended up having to give them an ounce of pear juice. I don't suggest you do this unless your pedi says it is ok.

Are you breastfeeding? I noticed that when I starting giving my boys more formula then breastmilk, is when they became constipated. It lasted a couple weeks, until they're little belly's got use to it!!

If you are breastfeeding they can't get constipated(hard stool), it's normal if they don't poop for several days. If they are on formula they should poop everyday, beacause they easily gets constipated. We used malt extract in the last botle for the night if they hadn't pooped during the day. I live in Norway, and this is what parents are told from the healthservice here, except amount of malt extract is individual... If the babies have trouble passing gas/poop, it helps with massage on their tummy, stimulate around and/or right inside anus, or push their legs against their tummy to help them push... It worked for my oldest when she was troubling with gas/poop...

I wouldn't give them anything w/o consulting your pedi first since they're so young.

Any poop yet? I would put a call into the pedi today so you aren't wondering all weekend what to do if they don't poop by tomorrow night.

I gave my boys fennel tea. This helped with gas and constipation.

    All you do is:
boil 1/2 tsp fennel seeds with a cup of water.
Strain the seeds from the water and let cool.
Just give you baby 1/2-1 tsp of the tea and it should help.

It is a natural remedy my pediatrician gave us for the boys. It really really works!

Oh, it tastes like black licorice.

Use a thermometer in their bum. That always worked for us. I'd call the pedi if you are concerned. I know I called a million times in the beginning. That's what they are there for. Are they on formula? I know soy formula can constipate.

If they're truly constipated, meaning they're passing hard stools, you should call your pedi. If they are just infrequent stoolers, meaning they don't poop at all for several days, you can do nothing because it's usually not a problem (it's normal for babies' stool patterns to change at around a month old - they start going less often) or you can add one to two teaspoons of dark (not white) caro syrup or prune juice to their bottles once or twice a day.
