    Hi everyone,

I did some research on Prevacid and our doctor prescribed a compound solution that we squirt in their mouths and ahve a banana/marshmallow taste to it. I've read that this form isn't as effective as the little dissolvable pills/beads... What did you use?

    :thanks:

Anna, we found that the compounded version didn't work as well as the pills. :pardon: Good luck with your decision.

We had to do a compound for the first few months we were on it b/c Gabe needed a dose that wasn't in the solutab form (it was an odd dose). On one hand, it was much easier to get in him that way b/c the solutabs were difficult to figure out how to get dissolved at first. We did eventually move to the solutabs b/c he needed that dose and it didn't need the whole insurance auth. (our insurance would never fill the script without prior auth. b/c it was a compound and was so pricey, needing a Dr.'s note of medical necessity - you would think that a script for it with a diagnosis would be enough!).

I use the compound for my dd and the tabs for my ds. The compound is SO much easier to give but it was too difficult for me to keep up with it for both b/c it has to be refilled every 2 weeks (b/c it loses it's effectiveness at that point). My ds's reflux is worse and it didn't work as well for him but I have friends who swear by the compounded version.

I've also heard that the compound loses effectiveness after 2 weeks. As long as you have a 2 week refill it should be fine, but if it's a month's worth at a time, the last 2 weeks may not work as well.

Once we developed a routine with the solutab it was a piece of cake, it just took some experimenting to figure out the best way to dissolve it for our dd!

We used the Solutabs the entire time.

We started on zantac and when we switched to prevacid we switched straight to the solutabs. I try to never prescribe the compound solution unless it is in the hospital because community pharmacies don't always do it right and it is very difficult to keep in solution. This is because the prevacid itself is designed to activate when exposed to stomach acid and doesn't dissolve well in water based liquid. Thus, in the solution they have to do complicated acid-base chemistry to get it to dissolve and yet stay active and it can be unstable. This is why it only lasts 2 weeks and why sometimes it stops working before the two weeks. Especially if your babies are still having reflux symptoms I would suggest switching to the solutabs.
