Colin and Nathan are Here! Birth Story - Almost 32 Weekers

I left work at 2 pm last Friday and headed to my last ultrasound appointment before my scheduled C-section on Monday and I had a pit in my stomach- I just knew that that was going to be the day the boys entered the world.

I had been going in every other day for bio ultrasounds due to severe IUGR of twin B (Nathan). Our goal was to get to 32 weeks after we'd found out about the IUGR at 24 weeks. At 29 weeks, the doctors became less optomistic as Nathan fell to the 0th percentile. Still, we hoped he'd hang on until 32 weeks. Last Friday, the doctor discovered low fluid and sent me for a non-stress test which verified that Nathan needed to be delivered ASAP. So, I walked over to Labor and Delivery, and told my husband to rush to the hospital. I called my family and they were crushed as they were due to come in from NY on Sunday night for my scheduled section on Monday. Luckily, my husband arrived as they were testing the pain threshold from the epidural. 5 minutes later, we were parents!

Colin arrived first, wailing and pink, and weighing 3 pounds 11 oz. Nathan was next and the medical team laughed at his robust, squeaky-pitched cry, calling him a micro-preemie. He was a whopping 1 pound 10 oz. Both scored 9 out of 10 on their APGAR tests and have been breathing room air since birth. Nathan has had some challenges with feeds but Colin is just about ready to breastfeed! We feel so incredibly lucky that they are doing as well as they are and have not had to be intubated. They will have some lengthy NICU time for sure, but we knew that was going to be the case when we chose to deliver so were as prepared as we could be. The night I was discharged from the hospital was the hardest, but I have been here early a.m.- late eve since they were born and know they are in good hands when I can't be here.

I posted a while back asking for IUGR experiences and visited the NICU forum regularly before they were born and I am so grateful for everyone's advice and support, so THANK YOU!

Sounds like they are two tough little birds! A big congratulations to you and also hoping they just surprise everyone and get big fast and get to come home soon!!!!

Do not overdo - go home for a few hours and rest if you can. I had a little one in NICU for a month (a 31 weeker) and I went in every am then came home for a nap in the later afternoon then went back for the evening with dh. Just watch that you aren't getting too tired. If you can eat and sleep you'll be better at producing the liquid gold!!

Once again congratulations. No intubation is a huge step!

Congratulations!!!!! And a great big warm welcome to Colin and Nathan. That is great that they did not need to be intubated- especially Nathan-he must be one tough little guy. I am a NICU nurse so I see lots of multiples and I have to say that the littler one is usually the tougher one. Best of luck to you and remember to get lots of rest. I kind of overdid it when my twin boys were in the NICU and it effected my milk supply in the beginning. I hope they grow quickly and have a short NICU stay-probably about 4 weeks since they were 32 weekers. Best of luck and keep us informed.

Congratulations! It sounds like they are doing really well for how early they were. One thing I would suggest that I wish I would have done in the while my babies in the NICU (which I read one this site) is to leave a disposable camera at the NICU for the nurses to take pictures of them while you aren't there. I wish you and your babies the best and hope they can come home soon; they sound like fighters!
