    Hey Girls,

I have 2 girls and I think the one is colicky. I have all the anti colic bottles and the gentle ease formula (is there a better one for colic?). Autumn will be screaming alllllllllll night and wake Gabby up. I feel bad for Gabby cause she sleeps fairly well but with a baby screaming in your ear Im sure its hard to sleep. We tried separating them but they seem to cry more when they are apart then when they are together. I've tried alot of things like leaving music on, rocking her, vibrating seats, Mylicon.... Anyone have any other suggestions I REALLY NEED TO SLEEP. Its been few days. I really try to keep her quiet cause my husband drives a truck during the day and I dont want him gettin in an accident cause he was awake all night. And since Im on maturnity leave I been tryin to do all of it but its killin me cause I do it all night and all day by myself. I also have a 3 year old and its sooo hard! Please if anyone has suggestions I would really LOVE to hear them. Ill try anything to get a hr of sleep. Sorry for venting alittle its just soooo stressful. Thanks in advance. :BDH:

We were on the Similac Alimentum for a possible milk allergy and it did say that it was for colicky infants. Maybe that would help. I also read on here that loud white noise can help too like the dishwasher or vacuum cleaner. GL!

ETA: The book Happiest Baby on the Block might give you some tips for soothing.

DS was colicky until we changed to a totally soy formula and gave mylicon. A few good farts every night and he seemed to settle better, still whimpered and was clingly but easier to sooth since he wasnt screaming.

I second the white noise! One of my boys is fussy, colicky...just plain hard to get to sleep. DH recorded our vacuum cleaner. We have the recording on my ipod playing on a continuous loop when he sleeps. It has to be pretty loud, but both boys sleep with it playing. We use the real vacuum for moments when he's really fussy, and it does the trick. Also, he responds to a recording of a heartbeat. He also sleeps better on his tummy...I know that health care professionals say don't, but we have to put him on his belly for him to get any sleep. We just keep a close eye on him. Hope this helps!

Hang in there- you are doing great. The beginning can be so so so very hard. Some ideas from the Happiest Baby on the Block include swaddling, sh-ing, pacifier, when swaddled try holding on their side with a slight jiggle.... perhaps this may help. You've done a lot already - keep up the great work.

That link has a ton of noises! We also purchased the "Marpac" white noise maker. No sounds of trickling
water or waves or anything like that. This is pure "white noise" like a machine humming. They still sleep with it.

We went through the colic bad! From 6-9 p.m. was the worst time ever!

Swaddle tight, lots of walking around, holding them upright, lots of burping.
There really isn't one trick. You have to try everything and anything!

And did I read right that your girls are only 2 weeks old? oooohhh...this might be awhile! Our twins
went through this for several weeks and it started at around 7-8 weeks!

We used Similac Sensitive. But I've heard the Alimentum is really good.

We went round and round with our pedi about colic/fussiness as my son cried for the first three months. Yes, mylicon helped some, swaddling helped some and sshing helped some, but what finally stopped the crying was Nutramigin. It's from Enfamil, but is the same as Alumentim from Similac. In two days it was like someone brought us a different child who smiled. Try it and see. If it doesn't work for you at least you will know. I was so mad and felt horrible when it worked at 3 months after letting the pedi talk me out of formula changes all that time.

As for sleeping, during that time DS1 would only sleep on one of us. We took shifts with him sleeping on our chest in the recliner or on the couch. Luckily neither one of us drives for a living that would have made things much more difficult. Good luck it was a rough time and the answer, if one is found, seems to be different for each baby.

Have you got any family members who could maybe come in and help and give you a night off? Mine were colicky too but luckily didnt scream all night though the 1st month was tough.

I used to rock mine close to my chest when they got bad and did that till they fell asleep. I also used a dummy (i.e. pacifier). DS was pretty bad for the first 6 weeks. I used to go to a dark room with no lighting or any stimulation & that helped him immensely. I used to hum softly and rock front to back as Ive read that imitates when they were in the womb. Ive read that white noise helps too but I never tried it. DD screamed her way through from 6 weeks to 6 months and we just rocked her till she fell asleep. Ive never had any repercussions from doing this so dont listen to people when they say you´re "spoiling" them. Trust your gut instinct.

I feel your pain totally and I used to do the night shifts alone and it was hell. It does get better but please dont not ask for help if you need it. You need your sleep. GL

We switched to Similac Alimentum and within a few days we noticed that Izak was not as "uncomfortable". He wouldn't necessarily cry all day/night but would all of a sudden have these shrieks of crying and his face would get beat red and his cry sounded like he was in intense pain. After speaking with the pedi, he suggested the formula change and we were already using the mylicon drops. We also played (and still do) a classical CD full of lullabyes to get them to sleep at night... they love that. Good luck and hang in there. It will be over soon!

    Combination of the following:
    - Nutramagen Formula (sp?) -- if you suspect a milk allergy
    - Tight swaddling for all sleeping (Miracle Blanket)
    - Loud White noise
    - And, the swing (swaddled in swing w/white noise) for sleeping if the crib is not working or you're just plain worn out from rocking.

My 1st son was colicky and I know it is SO stressful. These things really helped. Hang in there. It does finally resolve itself.

At that age, do whatever works. Try swaddling and white noise like others have said. Try the swing, bouncy seat, or car seat. My girls slept swaddled in car seats for at least 4 months (maybe even longer) and it's just what worked for us.. you do whatever you can to get some sleep.. you are still in survival mode!!

also, do you have any family around or anyone who can help out during the day to give you a break to take a nap then?

Colic is one of the hardest things a parent can deal with. Its soo stressful. My first child was colicky for 6 mos straight. Daycare couldn't believe it lasted that long and that she was like that during the day too. I stopped breastfeeding and it went away. I feel horrible (I bf all my kids, so it didn't stop me, but I truly think it was something in my milk making her miserable) but I wanted to bf so badly. I am not saying that bf causes colic, but in my case I am convinced it did. She got better at night as long as she slept next to/on me. I did anything at that point to get her to go to sleep. So many drs tried to tell me to switch to that nutrigamen formula (however you spell it) but I didn't want to stop bf. When she would get into her big screams, I would go into the bathroom with the light off and turn on the bathtub water and just sit and rock her back to sleep. That would work at least for a little bit of quiet for me. Have you thought about separating them in rooms so that it won't wake the other baby?

Hope something works for you soon...I know its a tough time..

if you were a milk drinker, it could have been the milk going through.

i have three, no colic but i am praying for you.

the Fisher Price Ocean wonders swing was a godsend!!! It swings sideways and it was the only way any of us got any sleep....that and soy formula - once we switched to soy both my kids were different babies!

I am convinced that a lot of cases of colic are really an intolerance to cow's milk protein. My boys were very cranky, gassy, wouldn't eat much, wouldn't sleep much, and wouldn't poop for days. I stopped eating all dairy (I was bf and supplementing with formula) and switched to Elecare and they are totally different boys. They eat 6 to 8 ounces at every feeding now, no more bad gas, poop regularly, and even started sttn! I did some research on milk protein intolerance and found out it is common in premies because their systems can't handle breaking down the protein. A good amount of infants grow out of it (just like colic). Elecare is the same as Nutramigen AA. They are amino acid based formulas that do not contain cow's milk protein. It is very expensive, so I'd try alimentum first, which breaks down the protein so the babies' system doesn't have to. The formulas that are for just fussiness tend to only eliminate lactose and not the milk protein. So, definitely try Alimentum and then Elecare if Alimentum doesn't work. Good luck!
