Both kids have a cold [IMG]

This morning DS woke up with a yellow-green eye discharge in his right eye. After their afternoon nap, they both had the eye discharge. Is this common with a cold? They are both coughing, sneezing and have runny noses.
I am just concerned that there is an infection in the eyes that may need to be treated.

    Thanks.

**I called the pedi and was told to wait it out and call back if they got worse. Called back and left a message after a 2 hour wait for the return call got an appointment. Spent 2 hours at the pedi office to learn both kids have colds and pinkeye in both eyes. They look terrible and now I know to be more assertive when they tell me to wait it out! Poor babies!

Both mine have colds, too. DD's eyes are a bit watery but nothing green.
I would call the doctor to be on the safe side and see if they want to see them.

Could be conjunctivitis. I would check with your Ped.

Sometimes the ducts in the eyes can ooze mucous during a cold. It's so close to the nasal passages, and when there's a lot of snot, it can find it's way out there, too.

My friend's son had this happen every time he got a cold. She just used a warm wash cloth and wiped his eyes often.

The eye can also get red/have discharge with an ear infections. This just happened to my niece. Her eye became red and had some discharge and when my sister took her in it was an ear infection causing the problem.

My DS had the same thing this past week, but it went away. I called to doctor and she said to use a warm washcloth and dab the eye frequently throughout the day. She was not too concerned, but warned that if it became red, I should call her. It could be pink eye/conjunctivitis (sp?) if that were the case. His eye never got red and he did not seem too congested...But, it did go away after about a week. So, hopefully that it is just a little oozing and it will go away for yours, too.

Both my girls have had red eyes and green/yellow discharge in their eyes, even matting them shut by morning. I took them to the doctor last week who said it is "conjunctivitis", but not the bacteria kind known as "pink eye". It's simply a virus that goes along with their colds. He said any time the eye gets red, whether it is from injury, chemical splash, colds, any reason, it is called conjunctivitis. I hadn't known that until last week, and reading other pps posts, I thought I'd share what I just learned. So anyway, if you're concerned, I'd run it by the doctor to be sure, but usually what we know of as "pink eye" comes without any other symptoms. If your kids have colds, that's probably just coming along with them. HTH
