Okay, I am totally ignorant about this, but I need some help. A co-worker of mine has mono, and I was wondering if anyone knows what I should do to make sure I DON'T get it!!! I'm sure it will be fine, but I'm kind of freaking out about this. (don't you just love prego hormones?!) I won't be drinking from the same cup as the guy, but can I get it just from being in the same room or touching something (doorknob, papers, etc.) that he has touched??

    Help!

Here is some info on mono.

    QUOTE
Mono can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and sometimes tears.

Chances are you won't be doing any of that with a co-worker. I would call your OB to see if there are any other precautions you should take as well, just to be safe.

Thank you!!! I just called my OB to make sure there are no other precautions I need to be taking besides not drinking after the guy and not kissing him. LOL....My DH said, "yes, definitely make sure you don't kiss him!!" I couldn't stop laughing...

Okay, here is what my doctor said...

He said I probably don't have anything to worry about, but if I begin at any time to feel overly fatigued--way more than normal for pregnancy--then he will draw some blood and test for the Epstein Barr Virus (which is what mono is), just to be on the safe side. But he said I really should not have anything to worry about. Yay!!!

I have been really surprised by what the drs say about mono! My ds#1 had it while I was pregnant w/ my twins. My OB was not really concerned nor was my sons dr. as a matter of a fact they told me that unless Tad was running a fever he could go to school - there was no reason to keep him home. 10 yrs ago my BIL missed 12 weeks of school! he had to rest in bed!! they told me that mono is such a common virus - we are exposed more than we know! I was SO afraid of getting it when I was pregnant w/ the girls - I drink after all of my kids (or rather they drink after me!) all the time!! I was pretty fatigued just from being pregnant w/ twins so I just knew I had it - but I guess I never did I was fine and my girls were fine!

Yes. Most people get mono when they are smaller and it is more like a cold than a really bad sickness. It's when you get it when you're older that it can take you out for a long time. Once you've had it, you are a carrier (and pretty much immune) but can pass it on. I gave it to Paul right after we started dating. ;) I'm sure I caught it as a small child since I had so many cousins.
