this might not be the right place to post this, but for those of you who have already delivered twins, what did you wear afterward? i'm expecting that some of my earlier maternity clothes will be what i wear right afterward, but at what point do you put on normal clothes again? i've been in maternity wear since i was 8 weeks, so i am really looking forward to wearing real clothes again.

    thanks

I wore maternity clothes for at least 6-8 weeks after delivering the twins. Also with a c-section, regular clothes may not be too comfy, if you have one, I did.

You can wear your regular clothes again when you can get them back on and they are comfy. I think I was back in my jeans at 8 weeks, they were snug, but I could get them on at least.

I left the hospital wearing the same clothes I went in with (ugh). I had so much gas and swelling, I barely looked any smaller. And my feet were so swollen (which they weren't before I delivered), all I could wear were DH's slippers and sandals.

I started to look merely 6 months pregnant by about 10 days after delivery. And maybe 6 weeks later, I was down to looking 3 months pregnant. I was actually enjoying wearing a pair of maternity jeans that I had bought too late in the pregnancy and outgrown within a week. :icon_biggrin:

I think I gave up the maternity clothes sometime around 6-8 weeks postpartum, and started wearing my early-pregnancy clothes that weren't technically maternity, but were a couple of sizes bigger than my usual size. I didn't get back into my "normal" pants sizes until more like 6 MONTHS after delivery.

I wore my maternity clothes for quite some time. Even though I was back to my pre-preg weight after a couple weeks, my clothes were WAY too small. Going home from the hospital I wore my velour maternity sweat pants and an old navy maternity t-shirt. I had these pants and shirts in lots of different colors and so I wore these for a few weeks. After about four weeks of wearing the same ol' maternity stuff, I broke down and went to the Gap and bought a bunch of clothes the next size up. I wore these for about six months and then suddenly, my old clothes fit again. I just think with running all over with the babies and not snacking so much, I lost weight!

I don’t know about twins yet but when I went home from the hospital after having DS I wore a pair of PJ bottoms and a shirt that was two sizes bigger then I normally wear. Since I had a c-section there was no way I could stand the pressure of even maternity paints for the first week or so. After that I wore maternity bottoms and shirts. I think it was around 8 weeks before I finally could get back into some of my pre-pregnancy clothes and I too bought a size bigger paints and wore those. I was really bad about weight and ended up having to go on a diet to get back into my pre-pregnancy pants.
For the most part I think it all depends on the person and if it is a c-section or not as to how long it takes but I think most everyone is stuck in maternity clothes for a time after babies are born.

    Ditto!

I went home in a maternity shirt and stretch pants. And, my feet were still very swollen so I was wearing open backed shoes and my feet were squished into them. I had a c-section so pants weren't so comfy. When I first got home I stayed in PJs unless we were getting company. Then I was back in my maternity clothes. I would say at least 6-8 weeks before I attempted "normal" clothes.Comfort trumped fashion at that point. :)

I wore a ton of ribbed tanks and pj pants after the girls were born, unless we were going somewhere and I wore my maternity jeans, I think it was about 12 weeks after that I stopped wearing them altogether. About 4-6 weeks after I could fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans, just not very well.

After my DS I wore a lot of cute sweat outfits from NY and Company. I need to go get some for this delivery too. I think i bought a pair of jeans a size bigger and some shirts bigger too. I just was sooo sick of maturnity cloths that i refused to put any back on.

I wore maternity clothes for about 6-8 weeks post partum, then moved into clothing 2 sizes above my normal size. I just started being able to wear my old clothes this past spring, after lots of exercise and dieting. I'm not one of the lucky ones who dropped weight easily by BF'ing.

there is a huge difference between being back at pre-preg WEIGHT and pre-preg SIZE/SHAPE!! Even though I lost the weight pretty quickly, it was like someone had taken my fat and rearranged it on my body! I'm 4 months post partum now and I still feel like I'm not the same shape (bigger in the middle, saggier everywhere else!) but it is way better than even a month ago. I didn't like wearing maternity clothes after I had the babies just because I was sooooo sick of them! I bought a few transition size clothes to get me through a few months. HTH

definitely get yourself some loose fitting clothes...it'll be much less aggravating when you are trying to sit to feed your babies if you can be comfortable and not focused on the fact that your pants are cutting off your circulation in your abdomen!! With my first dd I was back in my size 6 jeans just 3 weeks later....with my twins it took about 18 months! And I only gained 31 pounds with the twins... I don't shed weight while bf...in fact my body holds on to it tighter.... and the extra skin takes awhile to tighten up again.

Definitely keep sweats on hand, especially if you're going to have a csection. I pretty much live in mine when I'm in the house. For the first 2 weeks, I wore my maternity pants when I left the house, but after my mom told me they looked much too big, I finally started putting on my pre-preggo pants. I'm actually 10lbs BELOW my pre-preg weight, but like pp said, the weight is all redistributed now, so clothes don't fit the same. I'm not sure if everyone has it, but my skin is sensitive on my belly, so anything tight on there bothers me...hence loving the sweats & pj pants! As for shirts, I wear my maternity shirts & bigger tshirts...need to go buy some new ones since my knockers are bigger now :)! I'm assuming when I stop BFing, I'll be able to fit into my old shirts again....

For those of you who had c-sections, do you believe a soft cotton dress (t-shirt material, surplice top) would be more comfortable when leaving the hospital than pants?

Not sure when you are going to deliver but I will tell you my experience. I had a c-section in the summer with my kids. I went home in a maternity sundress. My stomach was still swollen and there was no way I was getting into anything I wore before pregnancy. I gained 50 lbs with my kids and I am still trying to get back down to where I was. I wore maternity clothes for a while (even when I went back to work). I finally broke down and bought clothes 1-2 sizes from where I was for work and play. It has been two years and I am still not back where I want to be. Of course, I just started back exercising and I am in my late 30's so it appears to take a little longer to get the weight off. Anyhow, go with the maternity clothes and definitely wear something loose fitting so it won't aggravate your c-section area. Best of luck during the pregnancy!

It would but you might want some really soft shorts on underneath as you'll be bleeding heavily. I don't think I would have dared a dress for that reason alone.

To answer the first question: I think most women are stunned to find they look exactly the same or pretty close after they've delivered. You'd think after getting rid of 2 human beings or even one you wouldn't look huge anymore but for most women the change is minimal. Seriously its shocking for most women that you still look 9 months preggo or at best 6-7 months preggo. Its all major swelling from the shock of everything the body has been thru. Its worse with a csection but I still looked big after my vaginal births too.
So anyway maternity clothes should be planned on when leaving the hospital.

I think I would have felt too vulnerable in a dress. (I'm not really a dress person, though.) I felt like I needed something to hold my insides in (and to hold the pad on).

I certainly was! I had no illusions about being back in my non-maternity clothes, but I thought it would at least be obvious that I'd actually HAD the babies. I look at pictures that DH took in the hospital and I honestly can't tell whether they're "before" or "after."

I wore some very stretchy knit shorts and a top that fit in the second trimester home. I had a c-section and didn't find the elastic waist to be a problem. I wouldn't have liked a dress because I was nursing frequently and a dress means you either have to hike it up or pull it down -- neither of which allows for a discreet feeding.

I was 33 at the time and had gained 50 pounds (although I had some mega-swelling because 45 of that dropped off in the first couple of weeks). It took a long time to begin to resemble my former self. I still can't wear most of my pre-preg clothes and I'm 15 pounds lighter than I was when I got pregnant. I finally went and bought new clothes. Oddly enough, I wear the same size... I just can't wear any bottoms that are fitted in the waist anymore. My skin apparently stretched beyond its limits because it's still loose and saggy and the boys are almost 2.

Fair enough! I prefer skirts/dresses to pants as they are more comfortable to me, but I hadn't thought abexout the bleeding issue. I'm beginning to think an old pair of low-rise bike shorts under my dress will be my friend! Lord knows I won't be wearing spandex in public for awhile after the twins make their entrance, might as well get SOME use out of those shorts!!!

i plan on wearing all my men's-too-big sweat pants, and pulling them up to my chest, Urkel style :p that way, i won't have them hitting my incision. after i heal, if my pre-preg jeans fit me, it'll be a miracle <_<

I had exactly the same experience. 7 months later, I am in almost all of my pre-maternity clothes again. You will lose a lot of weight at the beginning, but your hips will probably still be wider from carrying twins for a while and don't expect the tummy to disappear for a few months!
