Cloth Diapers Restricting My Kids' Development?

I've been wondering recently if our cloth diapered babies are being too restricted in their movement/development. Let me start by saying I was not a fan of the cloth when we started, but have changed my opinion to feel that the boys know when they are wet and don't like it- and ENJOY diaper changes. Sure they kick, but are excited to be naked, LOL. So now they should be working on rolling over, but every time I put them on their tummies with cloth diapers, covers & clothes on, they lay around like beached whales. I try them naked and they can roll from front to back (1 can do much better than the other). I've been trying them in their Bumbos, too, and they scream like crazy if they are in cloth. But if they are naked (thanks, DH) or wearing a disposable, they are perfectly content to be in them.

What do you ladies think? My DH is hard-core cloth, but I'm thinking of sticking them in a disposable once a day to get to use the Bumbo & practice rolling with clothes on, LOL.

    Thanks,

My kids all rolled at about the same age, cloth diaper or not. I don't see why it would be restrictive.

Ditto that. Not to mention, cloth diapers have been around forever and they weren't always as trim as they are now. From personal experience, I and my brother were both on time with all of our milestones, so I don't think the diapers were an issue. I think they learn to move in spite of the dipes.

I guess it would be helpful to note, too, that DS#1 was in sposies and the twins are cd'ed and I don't notice any difference there, either. :pardon:

Could it be that they're just excited to be naked when they're rolling? I do a mixture of cloth and sposies and mine are always excited to be naked whatever they were wearing. Emaline crawled for the first time when she was naked. I think it just feels good.

This here, too. :) I think babies are just happiest when they're "streaking" as we call it. LOL! Cloth diapers shouldn't hinder their development at all, in my opinion.

    Ah, good!

    Thanks ladies!

I suppose it doesn't much matter in the grand scheme of things (I don't expect my 5 year olds to be naked all the time... maybe I'm naiive!), but I do want them to get practice. Due to yeast infections that would not go away, I started letting them go 5-10 minutes nude- I guess it's a good thing that they are enjoying naked tummy time!

I think I read that if your baby doesn't seem to want to learn to roll, you're supposed to strip them down to a diaper or nothing at all. The lack of clothes or anything makes them feel free and unrestricted. The you help them roll in one direction across a big blanket or carpet so they feel like they're making progress. You'll also find they might seem to bat at toys and play more in the buff, too (at least mine did). You might be getting this reaction to disposables just because they're lighter than cloth initially? Just a guess.

I try to give my boys some nekkid (with diaper) time every week, even if it's just to stand in the exersaucers. They really seem to love it and hate putting clothes back on.

I've never seen a baby yet who didn't love to be naked! But I don't think the cloth diapers will delay their development at all. Before there were disposables, we all learned to roll & sit, no problem.
