We started cloth yesterday. We have the BG Organic AIO's.
DD has a funky rash in the front.. Little red spots.. they are sorta raised.. and DS's private is swollen.. Is it because of the diapers?

Have any of you experienced this?

    TIA

What did you wash them with and how did you wash? That part is really important and can be challenging to figure out. Feel free to PM me if you like.

ETA: It sounds kind of like the rash my son used to get from a bad washing routine that I had. Not trying to withhold info... I just can't help much until I know what you're doing. :)

I washed them with free and clear tide. and i made sure that the soap was fully desolved before hand. I only used maybe a tablespoon..

I pre-washed and dried 2 times. And then had to wash them again last night. Same thing.. Washed in Cold and then in hot. then dried on med/low heat with no dryer sheet.

I dont know if it will help, but heres my routine and it works out well...

    I rinse with no soap
then a hot wash cold rinse with Charlies soap (free and clear is good, i hear the purex is better of those )
then i do a hot wash and cold rinse with NOTHING
    then dry them

good luck, if you want you can PM me as well..i have been using cloth for months and months now...

I know of a few people who are allergic to all Tides so you might try something else. Another suggestion is running vinegar through with your rinse cycle on the second wash with no soap (helps get rid of residues and gets rid of odors). When I was using cloths found that I had to change them every hour to hour and a half or my guys would get rashes. Hope this helps.

I'm planning on cloth diapering, and I hang out at a site called www.diaperswappers.com/forum . There are several people on there who say that if you're having rash problems, try using the full measure of detergent and rinse twice. You may not need to do this every time, but it's supposed to help, in case you're not getting out all the pee and it's making them rashy.

Again, no personal experience, but I thought I'd pass it on.

I would be inclined to think this is a residue issue of detergent rather than pee/poop because you just started. Sometimes you need to strip the diapers really well in order to get all of the residue out. It takes a little experimenting to learn what works with your particular kids, diapers, washer, and type of water (do you have hard water? It can make rinsing more challenging).

You might want to try vinegar in with your wash (rinse cycle).

I have heard a lot of people do one cold rinse, one hot wash, and 2 more cold rinses. That's pretty standard and probably the minimum most people need.

My washer is a front loader and does not rinse very well, so I end up doing one cold rinse, 2-3 hot washes, and 2 more cold rinses.

I have experimented a lot and have found that this combo works well for us as an every-other-day routine: 1 tsp of Dawn (dish soap!), 1/4 cup Borax, and 1/2 c Vinegar. I don't use any true detergent. Charlie's Soap burned my son horribly, and we had less severe rashes from some other stuff.

A lot of people say that the REGULAR Tide (the kind designed for HE machines, whether or not you have one) is really great for cloth diapers. I seem to remember hearing that the surfactants in free & clear Tide can cause problems (not positive though).

This site has a lot of good info on choosing a diapering detergent. Good luck!!!!!!!

We had a little bit of rash issues at first and then 'stink' issues in our microfiber inserts next <_<

And now that I've bleached the microfiber inserts and rinsed/rinsed/rinsed (repeat!) and found a wash strategy that works no problems since! I'm pretty sure detergent residue was our problem too.

I pretty much do what Erin said and I have a front loader too.

Cold wash/cold rinse on delicate cycle (I though I read somewhere that this uses the most amount of water of all the cycles and it takes the same amount of time as a regular rinse + spin)

Then, using probably only a Tablespoon of All Free & Clear (some folks have had issues with AF&C but I haven't yet ;) ) I do a Hot wash/cold rinse/extra rinse on Heavy Soil indicator. I do put plain white vinegar in our fabric softener slot. *if you do decide to try the vinegar, I read on diaper swappers to try running an empty load with just vineger in the fabric softener slot if you use fabric softener at all because it can pull the old coating of fabric softener on the dispenser and then deposit it on your diapers*

I then run another cold rinse & spin cycle (depending on time, I sometimes do a quick cycle on that or just a regular)

About every 1 or 2 weeks I also throw in 1/2 cup of baking soda into the wash with the diapers.

    GL!
