Cloth diaper advice for twins?

I cd'ed my singleton DD, but didn't start until she was about 4-5 months. I'd like to get my boys started sooner, but I am stumped as to how much of a "stash" I should start with! I also don't know about sizing - my DD really only needed a supply of smalls and mediums, plus a few larges towards the end. We completely bypassed the preemie and newborn (extra-small) size stages.

With DD, we used AIO's for daytime (Bumkins were my favorites), and pocket diapers for nightime (my favorites were fuzzi bunz). We used these after lots of trial and error with other types of dipes, so I plan on sticking with the same brands this time around (plus, we still have DD's stash to re-use).

So, if I start cd'ing my boys within the first month, what do I need?

    TIA!

I think it depends upon the size of the baby too...

I bought 6 dozen prefolds and 8 wraps (3 dozen newborn/small size prefolds, 3 dozen medium, 4 each of small and medium wraps), and a dozen bumgenius one size pockets. I think the prefolds/wraps will fit a bit sooner that the BGs will, but I doubt any of them will fit right away, so I have some disposables for the first little bit.

It sounds to me like you may just need more of what you have if you have a system you like already!

edited to add: they say newborn twins go through about 20 diapers a day, so it will depend upon how frequently you wash too! If you plan on washing daily, I think you could probably get away with 2-3 dozen.

I asked this same question on the diaperswappers.com website and got varied answers. I didn't cd with my first and want to do it with the twins... but the more I think about it, the nicer disposables sound. My biggest thing isn't just cost savings, it saving the earth, too. But anyhoose, you might want to check out that site because they really are great for building stashes and selling old ones.

We are CD'ing our twins and also CD'ing my 22 month old. We use FuzziBunz. We started CD'ing when their cords fell off and now they are about 6 lb and 7lbs, and it's going well. I have 16 small fuzzibunz. Yes, I have to wash more often, but I also tend to use sposies overnight and when we go out - and if I'm washng a load and don't have them done yet. It saves a ton, even if we are "strict" about CD'ing ALL the time.

I'm starting with that stash, and I'll get more if I need it. Otherwise, I'll just do that!

So, you were able to use FB smalls from the time their cords fell off? I was worried that they would be way too huge on my little guys (since I didn't start using them on DD until 4-5 months), and that I would have to stock up on some x-smalls to make it through the first months. ...but maybe I just need to build up my stash of smalls and mediums? I really want to start cd'ing in the first month or so, but I was concerned that my boys would be too small for smalls (and didn't want to invest in a stash of x-smalls/newborns that would only last a couple of months at best!)!

I will be using Bumgenius on mine. So as soon as the cords are clear they are going in them.
I also have 2.5 dozen prefolds ,10 snappi closers and 5 covers each for them for the waiting time until they get in the BG's.

Yep - we have been able to use the small FB's - and like I said, when I started using them at about 3 weeks, they were only 6 and 7 pounds. They're not super tight around their legs or anything, but we haven't had any leaks, and we only change them at feedings, which is every 3-4 hours. It seems to be going well so far! If it were me, personally, I wouldn't get x-smalls - they'll be in smalls pretty soon anyway. Also, we are still using mediums on our 22 month old - he's about 24 pounds, and still on the smallest snaps, so I think we'll make it through potty training in those. We used smalls on him through about 6-8 months, I think. Maybe longer.

We started cloth diapering the twins right before they turned 1 and we've cloth diapered Dax from birth. You are going to need at least 24 size small diapers in the beginning. Since twins tend to be smaller than singletons, the most economical alternative to xs diapers is to get about 3 dozen preemie prefolds and 6-8 diaper covers for the first few weeks. Dax was large enough to easily fit in small diapers at birth but I still used a lot of prefolds because they are cheap. Prefolds can be a bit of a pain on older babies but newborns aren't wigglers so they're easy to use at a young age. My DH had no problem using the prefolds on the baby even though he was used to pocket diapers.

We used mostly Happy Heinys with the girls after trying Bumkins AIOs, Fuzzi Bunz, Wonderoos, and others. Happy Heinys were always just the easiest for us because the velcro allows quick changes with two mobile babies. If you are looking at buying more pocket diapers, you may want to consider the Happy Heiny One-Size diaper. It is for sizes XS-L so it is ideal for twins. It also comes with two microfiber inserts so all you would need is some hemp. Like a pp said, diaperswappers.com is an excellent resource for almost new diapers.

If you have any questions about cloth diapering, please let me know and I'll be happy to help. We retail Happy Heinys as well.
