Hi, I promised to ask the dentist at my last visit, and here is what the dental hygienist said: Either rinse their mouths with water after they eat, or use one of those finger tooth brushes to brush teeth and gums after they eat, so they get used to feeling your finger in their mouths.
She said the issue is that 20 minutes after any food/milk is in their mouth, the mouth becomes acidic and that can cause the perfect condition for tartar and eventually cavities. I hope I got that explanation right!

We use one of those little brush things that you stick your finger in. They absolutely LOVE it! It think it feels good on those sore toothies and gums.

I've only been doing it at night before bed--didn't realize you were supposed to be doing it after each feeding. Great... one more thing...

With my son we always used a clean wash cloth. One of those realllllly tiny thin ones.

Our pediatrician said to use gauze once or twice a day for now, I'm sure we'll work up to those cute finger toothbrushes later on.

I have used the Orajel cleaner with the tooth rubbing thing that goes on your finger. They like it a lot. Thanks for sharing!

We used a wash cloth, too. Now DS absolutely loves having his teeth brushed.
