Cleaning Bottles

Hi ladies,

Do you sterilize your bottles and nipples after every feed, or do you just throw them in the dishwasher with or without detergent? Also, what about your pumping accessories? Do you just rinse, wash with soapy water or put them in the dishwasher? It just seems like a lot of work to have to sterilize every time.

I only boil the nipples about every 1-2 weeks. I've never sterilized bottles. We hand wash everything for the babies in hot soapy water.

Pump parts hmmm.... well my horns I wipe clean after each pump and then wash them every few days, the valve/membrane parts I rinse after every use unless I stick them in the refrig and use again later. Then every few days I take everything apart and soak in hot soapy water and use the bottle/nipple brush to clean. I replace the little white flap if it needs it. I've tried the micro bags and they don't work so great. Oh and the membranes sometimes need a good cleaning with q-tips to get in all the crevices, but I don't do that really often.

I used to wash the pump parts more and better in the beginning, but as time has worn on being an exclusive pumper I've gotten lax. I run them through the dishwasher sometimes too, but not the bottles.

 

I just wash the bottles and nipples in hot soapy water and air dry. I heard boiling and the dishwasher isn't good for the bottles.

My pumping stuff I think I just washed it with hot soapy water and then sterlized everything once a week.

I only sterilize the nipples before we use them the first time. I also sterilize when I'm battling a yeast infection (which seems like all the time) or if they are starting to look a little yucky. We use silicone nipples. You aren't supposed sterilize latex ones after the first time.

I hand wash bottles in hot soapy water most of the time. Sometimes I throw them in the dishwasher if it is going to be run soon. Same thing with my pump parts. Usually they are hand washed, but every once in a while I throw them in the dishwasher.

ETA: If your bottles aren't BPA-free, you shouldn't put them in the dishwasher. I'm not sure about sterilizing them though.

As a first time mom....Hehehe...I did NOT sterilize after every feed. I even didn't sterilize before the first use! I don't use the dishwasher-I just handwash them all. And when I ask dh to wash them-he puts them in the dishwasher and detergent is used. When the boys had thrush-I sterilized after every use-the nipples only. In the beginning I would occasionally sterilize the bottles(maybe once/twice a week). That was more of a hassle than anything.

My boys are growing and thriving! I don't think it's going to make a huge difference what you decide to do.

 

I only sterilize the nipples and paci's before the first use. After that we've just washed everything in the sink in hot soapy water. That goes for pump parts too. During the day at work I stick the pump parts in the fridge to use again then wash everything at night. Bottles have been washed in the dishwasher a few times but there are so many and the dishwasher is so rarely empty that it's just easier to do them by hand.

 

I only streilize bottles and their parts before their first use. After that, I either hand wash with warm soapy water, or throw them in the dishwasher with detergent if I happen to be running it. For my first daughter, I used to use a microwave sterilizer after EVERY use for the first few months- oy! Now I hate to wonder how much of that BPA chemical leeched into her feedings at the time (I used Avent).

 

I wash bottles and pump parts in hot soapy water. I only wash the pump parts once a day. The other times I pump (I pump 5Xday) I use the quickclean bags in the microwave.

Hi. I only sterilized stuff before using the first time. I haven't done it since. I wash everything (including pumping parts) in hot soapy water. That's it for me.

 

Everything is washed with hot soapy water once a day, I have enough pump parts to get me through a whole day without having to wash it. We also have enough bottles and nipples to go through a whole day without washing them, as we make bottles ahead of time for the day. I microwave paci's once a week in a Pyrex 4 cup measuring cup, I place another 1 cup Pyrex cup on top of the paci's to make them sink.

 

Like most everyone else, we sterilized the nipples before the first use, but now we wash everything in hot soapy water. We throw them in the dishwasher if we're getting ready to run it, but for the most part we handwash - which is time consuming with all of the Dr. Brown's parts! I'm very particular about the dishwater, though. Nothing else goes into that water to be washed until after all of the bottles are finished. When I was in the hospital after their birth, the lactation made a very simple statement that has haunted me since... "babies have exquisite taste". My husband wishes she had never said that since I'm now so weird about the water. Ha Ha!
