    Hi Ladies,
My son was born 5 weeks early and we were told that he was "too small" to get circumcized and we would have to wait until he was a year old to get it done.

Well, I made the appointment, but I'm nervous because of the pain he will be afterwards. He had surgery on his hand earlier this year and the medicine helped a graet deal with the pain. But pain "down there" may be worse?

My question: has anyone had their son (s) circumcised as a toddler? Pease share your experience with me.

    Thanks in advance!

I don't have any experience, but just thought it was interesting you were told he was too small to be done earlier. My DS was born 3 months early and had it done before leaving the NICU at 2 months and weighed only 5 lbs.

Hope it's not too painful for the little guy.

My son was 5 weeks early, too. We had his done at 13 months. It wasn't that bad. The worst part was getting the IV in his arm and waking up right after the 30 minute surgery. He was playing by that afternoon. Motrin was all that he needed for the pain. Good luck. It won't be as bad as you expect it to be.

Summerfun: Really, at 5 pounds? Wow. Amazing how different each state is. Thanks for the info.

Tam1969: Whew! Thanks for responding. Reading your reply puts me at ease. Thanks!! At 3 months they told us he was too small then at 6 months they said the same thing and also said wait til he is one year old to have it done. What was your son's healing time? Months?

I don't know about the pain, but just wanted to let you know that when my boys were born they wouldn't do it at the hospital because of their weight. They were both 5 lbs. My OB had to do it about 2 weeks later in his office.

It is interesting how every place is so different. He had his done the day before he left the NICU and when he came home he was 5 lbs. 2 oz. They never once said he was too small. :unknw: Good luck to him and you. I hope it goes well.

Mine were born at 33 weeks and Archer had his done before we left the hospital 3 weeks later too. He was maybe 5 lbs at that point. Interesting how it differs from state to state!

I don't want to start a debate, but I wonder why you are doing it now after he's been fine for 15 months uncirc'ed. Why put him through it unless it is medically necessary?

My DS had it done when he was 3 wks old in the pediatricians office. I was sweating and sooo scared to watch this happen to my baby. Honestly it was far worse on me than on him and he was fine by that afternoon. By the next day you couldn't even tell that anything was done "down there". I hope it is just as easy on your little guy. I know he is older but it sounds like they heal pretty easily. Let us know how it goes.

I expected them not to be able to do my son as he was 4.5 lbs at birth and the pedi in the hospital said it can be done as long as they are over 2.5 lbs...

yep i did one of the twins at 15 months. it was traumatic for me but not really for him. it was a general anasthaetic which was scarry (i cried) but the whole thing took 30 minutes. then he was straight in my arms for the whole recovery, a few hours. he mainly slept all the drugs off. he was whingy for 24 hours, but then he was fine. it was hard to make sure that he didnt bang himself on the slides, or by his brother. also no swimming for 1 month. so winter is best.

it was a challenge for me to look after him, but he didnt notice anything.

get it done, so that it's over, then you wont have to think about it anymore.

I guess all state are differnt. The boys were born at 34w6d and got theirs done before leaving the hosiptal they were both under 5lbs then they got it done...

I would say tylenol or motrin and lots of extra huge... good luck !

Twinmom205: it's not a problem..ask away. We wanted it done before he left the hospital, but couldn't. We want it done because of bacteria growing under/between the skin. I have heard stories of men not being circumcised and causing bacteria, infections to grow "down there." I have also heard of unplesant smells down there that may be the cause.

I just wanted to add that the Academy of Pediatrics has no recommendation either for or against. Anecdotally I know men who have little feeling 'down there' because of circumcision. So there are arguments on all sides.

I have quite a bit experience with surgeries "down there". My boys were not circ'd before leaving the NICU. Jackson was circ'd at 9 months and Jaydon was 20 months and was circ'd in addition to having his 1st of 2 3rd degree hypospadias repairs. Both did fine with the pain, and I should add, Jaydon had 112 stitches (all but 2 were on the inside). Jaydon HAD to be circ'd. His foreskin was used in his repair.

Both of my boys were done at 1 year. they did not do them in the NICU, (they were 4.5 lbs at the time) because of the OB's choice- I don't think it's a state thing- I think it's really the OB or Doctor's preference. My pedi was suprised that they were not done in the NICU, yet my OB stated she didn't feel comfortable enough when they were so small.

MY DGS's were born at 35 weeks. One weighed 4 lbs and the other 4 lbs 6 oz when leaving the hospital, and both were circumsized before leaving.

We just had our 24 month old re-circumsized last month. I think it was harder on us than him!! He did not seem to have a lot of pain. He was very quiet the first day but playing the next day. The hardest part was taking the bandages off and his dismay at seeing himself. It has taken at least 4 weeks for him to get back to where he was before the surgery. He had regressed a little bit and I feel its due to the surgery. He still does not touch it and will not go without a diaper, but we are hoping that will change in time. Better to do it now than later thats for sure...Good luck!!!
