We have done some level of CIO and our boys typically go down between 6-7 pm and are up usually around 4 (about 75% of the time) for a bottle then back to sleep till usually about 7. I want to get past the 4 am feeding and want to let them CIO, but it seems like these days there is always something going on – teething, colds, growth spurt, etc. Should I let them CIO anyway? Or just go with it and trust that if they are waking they really do need something.

Its a short time in their life and it will be gone before you know it!
First off, holy cow! When did your boys grow up??? Okay, back on track. I would wait till they are healthy. Are you letting them cry at all? Maybe just giving them 5-10 mins first would work?
I agree with the pp. I only let my boys CIO if they're healthy. My boys went through the same schedule. We started CIO at about 8 months (for the middle of the night feedings) which took about 2 nights. They were still waking at 4:00 for a quick bottle then back to sleep til about 6:00 or so. I did that until they were about 1 and then we did CIO for that 4:00am feed which again only took a night or two and now they sleep from 7-6:30. Heaven!! But if they're sick or teething, I'm a bit more lenient Good luck and I hope they're feeling well enough soon so you can get more sleep!!
I know the feeling... it seems that whenever I make some progress with CIO he starts teething again, then there's the inevitable ear infection... then there's usually a cold every other month or so, so it's one step forward, two steps back. I usually will be lenient when he's going thru this.
