My Taylor has had pretty severe reflux. I have elevated her mattress but she still has a hard time. She currently takes naps in her swing. I have tried to transition her into the crib but she screams so much that she throws up. She has actually choked twice and I had to come in a rescue her. The problem is eventually she is going to outgrow the swing. Then what? At night I put her in the crib and she sleeps for about 30-45 minutes. I try to let her cry, I am not opposed to CIO I used it with my oldest and she has great sleep habits. Whenever I let her cry she ends up throwing up and choking in the crib am I doomed forever? WWYD?

    What med(s) is she on?

We've had great success with Zegerid. Check out the Marci reflux website for more info. It made a huge diff for us.

More elavation in the crib? Maybe some type of sleep positioner?

Good Night Sleep Tight by Sleep Lady Kim West helped us alot.

And you aren't doomed. It sucks, but it will get better!!!

Will she cry less if you stay with her and shush pat her? Crying exacerbates the reflux for many babies, so once they get going things just get worse and worse. But ours will generally cry in a more controlled way if we are with them (and in the beginning we picked them up if they started getting really hysterical), so they don't throw up -- and after a week of that, they are going down in their crib fairly easily (most times).

Also, as the pp said, you might try elevating the mattress more -- the swing is very upright, and maybe she needs it to be that high. They make straps that hold the baby up on an elevated mattress (so you can increase the angle more than if she was just lying there loose), or Kim West (the Sleep Lady) suggests creating a U shaped prop out of a receiving blanket and pinning it to the mattress beneath her feet.

Is she on any medication for the reflux? Brooklyn is on Zantac and that seems to have really helped her. If she is still having reflux issues and is on meds, maybe you should try switching to something more effective?

Have you thought about a bouncy chair? Some are as cheap as $10, and they are upright..those seem to last awhile.

Cereal in the bottle? I know its a big no no but it did help Brooklyn with keeping stuff down before we got a prescription. Just a thought [IMG]

Eventually they outgrow the reflux, so you aren't doomed forever! [IMG]

We had to switch our daughter to prevacid solu-tabs.. but I think it was a little later- closer to two. My daughter would also sleep in her swing or bouncy seat or carseat to keep her upright. We also tried feeding her a little bit earlier and keeping her awake for awhile before settling her down for the night. Again my memory fails me but whenever she was allowed to sleep on her tummy that seemed to help quite a bit too.. Another thing to help with the baby pukes, we use a cut piece of thick fleece right under my daugther's head and that usually contains most of any spit-up. Good luck...At least you are not dealing with the projectile vomits.. I hope..

I am soo sorry. I feel your pain. My daughters are going to be one next month on the 20th and they are still on prevacid solu-tabs. the older twin is not eating at all.. She cries for the bottle and then when I give it to her she only takes 1/2 to 1 oz and then stops. I am taking them to another GI specialist this Saturday and I am hopping for some answers.. at night she wakes up hour on the hour until 2 am crying.. I have not tryied the CIO. I have purchased Dr. Ferber's book, but do not have the hart to try CIO yet.

Good luck ,take her to another doc.. try another med.

I put my girls in the swing also for the naps.. They love it... I know it is not good but that is the only way they will sleep during the day..

I am with there with you.. Good luck and hope things get better for you soon.

If I get anythign new from my doc appt. this saturday i will share it..

You might try rocking her to sleep. Yes I know you want her to form good sleep habits but CIO is not for every baby. My Jessy had mild reflux and still if she cries for very long will puke. I refuse to do CIO with either girl, I rock them both to sleep and put them in their cribs(we are working on transitioning from co-sleeping). I go to great legnths to make sure Jessy doesn't cry so much and get sick and still it happens (like last night on the way home from dinner).
