Christmas Eve party - kids not invited?

We received an invite to a Christmas Eve open house a few days, hosted by a good friend of our family who lives about 10 minutes away. She had addressed the envelope to "The Our Last Names". I called and RSVP'd saying we'd love to stop by and we were all looking forward to seeing them (couple in their 60s with grown children). Well today I called to ask if I could bring anything and she said how glad she was that we had found a babysitter. I didn't even know what to say. Um, a babysitter on Christmas Eve? For an open house party from 3:30 - 7:30 that was billed as casual? There was no way I even considered that kids weren't invited. So - I stumbled my way through that we were still looking for a sitter and would hope to see them but if we couldn't find one, we'd hope to see her soon.

Am I crazy? Who invites people with small children to an event on Christmas Eve afternoon that is adults only? Urgh. Now I have to tell my kids that we're not going to Jennie's house after all; they were so excited!

Awww, man, she should have said it was "adults only" during the invitation process.

That is just odd! If she had invited a lot of couples in their 60's who weren't going to be with family that day, it totally makes sense. But who has a Christmas Eve party expecting parents to leave th kids with a sitter?

I find it hard to believe she honestly believed you would get a sitter for the kids on Christmas Eve. I am sure you guys will have a fun evening without the party!

Wow, that is kind of crazy. I agree she should have worded it on the invite if it wasn't a whole family thing.

No kids???!!! Perhaps she confused Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Totally nuts.

:woah: For real? I would be shocked too, and politely decline saying that we like to spend Christmas Eve as a family.

I wish I had thought to say this so she'd realize how odd it was to invite only two people in my FAMILY. We already had plans to do a big local event, the Canyon Road Walk - where thousands of people walk up and down a narrow street lined with art galleries. Everything stays open late, there are bonfires in the road, snacks and cider everywhere, carolers, and tons and tons of lights. It's awesome and the girls are finally old enough to go. So, we'll just stick to the original plan and not go to the open house first.

Thank you all for validating that I wasn't just clueless here!

No, the invitation should have specified adults only. The Canyon Road walk sounds like a lot of fun. Enjoy!

The Canyon Road Walk sounds like SO much fun! Great decision to go to that...as a family. ;)
