Chicken Pox Exposure!

SO my sister called this morning, turns out her 5 year old broke out in chicken pox last night. She also has a 3 month old, and shes worried about the exposure to her baby, as well as our twins. Allt he babies are BF babies. They were over ALL DAY on wednesday, and that night, both of them started showing symptoms of a bad cold. Her 3 month old then presented with goopy eyes on thursday morning, and was prescribed OTC polysporin drops. Then last night, the first pock showed up on my nephews foot. I know that theres a 21 day incubation period, and some people say its more like 14 days. Has anyone had experience with newbies and chicken pox? If they're just new and can't scratch, maybe it wouldn't be so bad? Im almost leaning on letting my nephew come over and hold the twins!! When I was young, parents had chicken pox parties ( It sounds sooooo bad... i know) I had chicken pox at 9 months after one of these "parties" and my mom said it was WAY better than dealing with a toddler or older child with chicken pox. Am I crazy to think about this?

PS... My nephew.. the 5 year old, had the chicken pox vaccine... so much for that!!

You know they are awful young. I wouldnt intentionally continue to expose them at this age as I would worry about them getting ill at their age.. I also wouldnt sweat it that they have have already been exposed. THey may still have enough immunity to avoid getting them. If not, generally the younger kids handle it better. My first one had them at 12 months and didnt know he was sick and only had about a dozen spots in his diaper area and in his hair. My second got them when she was eight. She wasnt real sick with them but was literally covered from head to toe. My younger brother got them at 17. Was totally miserable. Got them in his eyes his ears his throat as well as everywhere else.

Hope you get to wait at least a few more months before dealing with this.

I would definitely not intentionally expose my 1 month old to chicken pox. :(

All 6 of my children got Chicken pox when the twins were 7 months old. One of the twins just had a few, the other one had alot and ended up getting impetigo with it. That twin had to be on antibiotics and he does have pox marks scars on his face. I've also heard it is possible for children to get them again if they got the pox before one year of age. My DH got exposed to chicken pox when he was breastfeeding (not sure of his age) and he never developed the chicken pox and didn't get them when our kids were sick either.

I would definitely not expose you twins on purpose, not at this age. Breastfeeding can help, but you just never know how they will react to them. Like my twins one was way worse than the other. We did make it through. I'm hoping they won't ever get them again.

Are they vaccinating for chicken pox in all the states now? Cause I know my daughter got one for it so she wouldn't catch it. They don't want them to get it anymore. I don't remember how old she was when she got the vaccine though... I think it was before 15 months.

I don't think you are crazy but I would not intentionally expose infants to the chicken pox (I wouldn't even my toddlers). I hope it by passes your little ones!

I may be wrong, but I believe you have to get a couple rounds of vaccines for it to be effective, stick longterm, etc. My son had the first vaccine, but still caught it at age 4. It was a pretty mild case though at least. ;)

I'm one of those weird people who got chicken pox 4 times before my body was immune. At the time, the doctors said it was because the first time I got them I was under a year. I want to say it was 8/9 months. Each time I got them it was less, but I was still contagious and pretty miserable. I would NOT expose your infants to your nephew again. I would also call your ped and see what they think. There may be more serious side effects in such a young infant and they should be able to tell you what to watch out for. I hope they stay healthy!

I have always heard that you won't build a strong immunity to CP if you get it before a year of age so if your LO's get it, it's likely they will again later on. Also the CP vax is a live virus and can easily shed and you said your nephew is 5 so chances are he was recently vaxed for school perhaps?

I wish I could find a wild strain of CP, I would attend that party ;)

I assumed the OP was smart enough to figure out that I'm not telling her to expose her 1 month olds to CP...Geez, give her some credit.

Actually, I think it could have been taken that way Angie. Thanks for clearing that up.

I really don't care how old my kids are, to intentionally take them to a 'party' in hopes of them getting sick is a bit  sounding to me. :pardon:

Actually, I give her all the credit in the world for being a new mom of one months olds and posting. You never know how a sleep deprived Mom would take something. Thanks for clarifying your point.

They have a vaccine for CP now.

Just as a offside note - the vaccine does not prevent you from getting chicken pox in all cases - sometimes it can just cause you (or your child) to have a less severe case of the virus.

ok so I feel like I need to mention that I was not SERIOUSLY considering exposing my LO's purposely to CP. I was joking, but the story about the CP parties is true! as for the vax, it is true that they will more than likely just get a lesser outbreak. so far, the 3 month old isn't showing any signs or symtoms, but it is still early.
and thank you for the credit.. I may be sleep deprived but im not a moron :p nor am I a first time mom :)

So the lovely matter of having twins (newbies at that) with chicken pox is that it is still possible. You are contagious something like 5 days before the first spot, which would bring us back to about monday, and the boys were both over here all day friday. So it doesnt look great for us! we shall see tho.. and Ill be a little more careful with how I word my jokes.. I forget sometimes that you cant tell the tone in which something is written...

My oldest got the chicken pox vaccine when he was 3. He did get them this past Jan. although it had been 10 years and I believe they need a booster. Well he didn't get a booster and his case wasn't that bad at all. So who knows, as for my other kids none of them have or will receive the CP vaccine. Hopefully everyone will have immunities from January.

Let us know if your little ones get it! It is sometimes hard to tell who is joking.

My girls were exposed twice while I was breastfeeding, they didn't get it until they were 3 (and no longer breast feeding)
