One of my girls, who will be one this week, just starting chewing on the side of her crib. This morning she had tiny pieces of white paint on her face and I could see where she'd been chewing on the crib.

I see they make guards but I'm wondering if they really stay attached. When we've used corner guards on other furniture my girls always found away to rip them off. Did anyone have this chewing issue and is it a short-lived phase? Any solutions? It's a new crib so I'm assuming the paint is lead-free but I know it still can't be good for her to scrape away the paint with her teeth.

Thanks for any help you might have!!

my little "woodchuck" just chews elsewhere on the crib if we protect the crib w/ a guard... :lol I just switched her to a new crib (they were sharing before) and it already has been attacked :( If you find something that works please share with the class.

For us, they didn't work. Our cribs (on 3 out of 4 sides - they never chewed the long side that faced the wall) look like beavers live in the nursery with them. They are horrible. We first bought the flexible plastic pieces with adhesive...they would pick at the corners unitl they got them loose. Then, we bought the hard pieces that just snap into place...those were a joke after about a week. I would check on them after they fell asleep and there would be plastic crib rails in the bed with them. So, I finally said, "FORGET IT!" and did away with them all together.

For us, this was NOT a short-lived phase. It lasted from the time they each had about 4 teeth until all of the front teeth were in. They didn't do it once molars were coming in obviously b/c it wasn't soothing the back of their gums.

WOW I didn't know they made such a thing. I think I might have to look into that. Both of my girls are chewing on the rail that faces the door. They stand there waiting for someone to come get them :) chewing the whole time.

ETA: could provide a link so I know what I'm looking for, thanks.

Here's one that actually got good reviews - actually now that I look more closely those are review of the store not the actual product...

This is more what I was picturing but it doesn't sound like they're too effective:

I'm wondering if they'll just chew on the sides if you cover the front part. It doesn't seem like there's a good solution out there.

Toys-R-Us (well Babies-R-Us) carries a good one - I can't remember the name of it but it's in the saftey section. I comes in 4 pieces that fit over the rail. It is a friction fit and is made of a fairly heavy duty vinyl (it's clear). We have one on DS's crib (the guard was missing) and it's been great. He cannot get it off.

If you get anything, I would go with the first link. The second is what we had and they were able to get them pulled off. I had forgotten, but after spending tons of money on the different rails, I finally took a piece of leftover fleece (from blankets I made them) and I cut out spots so I could tie it under the rails. That worked for a little while. I had never seen anything like that first link or I would've gotten that!
