I have seen where some offer cheese as a finger food well being the 1st time mom that I am I'm ignorant! Is there a special cheese for babies? Or do you just buy cheese cubes or crumbles and cut them?

I first gave them shreds and then I cut cubes up into thin slices and they LOVED IT!

At first I gave them shredded (in half) and now I give them those crumbles. I break some of the bigger crumbles into smaller pieces.

It probably would be just as easy to give them small pieces of cut up cheese.

My girls LOVE cheese...it is a big hit!

I buy bags of cheese already cubed, then cut it in half. Perfect finger food size!

Great post - I was wondering the same thing myself - also wondering at what age did you first give cheese, and are there any types that are a no-no?

I've been using the crumbles. Although some of them I still need to break into smaller pieces.

When I had my girls in at 8.5 months for Synagis, the pedi gave the okay for cheese and yogurt. I don't know if we could have started earlier or not, but that is when I first asked.

After I knew that my kidlets could handle Cheerios and Gerber Fruit Puffs, then I gave them cheese. We started with shredded cheddar (because that was what we had in the house). Then we progressed to crumbles. You can buy the Kraft pre-crumbled cheese in the bags, which is super convenient. Or you can just shred, or slice then crumble it yourself. When they get really good at feeding themselves, you can just give them a slice and the can nibble it.

My kids no longer like cheddar (we usually buy sharp). They prefer jack or mozzerella. Experiment! But avoid soft cheeses that have not been pastuerized (kind of like when you were pregnant).

We started cheese at around 9 months. I think that was when our ped gave the OK for dairy (other than regular milk, which he said to wait till 12 months for).

I always just cut up regular cheese, the same kind that DH and I eat. The crumbles are convenient, but IMO not worth the extra price (and packaging) for the exact same cheese (especially if you still have to break it into smaller pieces!).

When we first started cheese, we cut it into tiny cubes (about 1/4"). Now we cut it into strips. Shredded would work too (wish I'd thought of it -- would have been easier than dicing!).

Ours like all the basic kinds -- mozz, cheddar, jack, colby, even gouda. They don't like really strong-flavored ones like blue cheese or aged goat cheese (DH is kind of a cheese freak), or spicy ones like pepper jack. But you never know -- some babies really like spicy food!
