I started giving my girls cheerios last month. I'm a BIG chicken though and was biting them in half. yeah I know - pathetic I say!! Now Momma is brave and they get the whole cheerio - hey the hole made me feel better :D My girls love them too. I've also gotten brave with the puffs too. They get WHOLE puffs now. have you tried them?

The hole made me feel safer giving them Cheerios vs. the Puffs, haha. I just gave them Cheerios about 3 days ago, I am hoping it will help them with the pincher grip.. Plus the ALWAYS want to eat what I am, Ill do Cheerios, but no way to baby food..

I'm a huge chicken too! I haven't tried cheerios yet with my kiddos.. and the one time we tried puffs I made sure DH was here. It didn't go well... they don't dissolve that quickly!!! But we did discover that Meara's gag reflex works (whole puff came popping right back out!). The only thing I keep thinking is that we have to try more textured foods soon because pureed first birthday cake is embarrassing (for me not them!).

To the OP, do your kiddos mush them with their gums? Do they have any teeth yet? How did you know they were ready?

Nope no teeth at all here. But those gums are tough, and Cheerios disolve very easy. I had read somewhere that at 7 months you could give them Cheerios. I didnt really buy they could eat them, but I tried, they both tried to swallow the first Cheerio whole, and gagged. BUT they wanted more. So I let them try again, they gummed them up and let their spit do the work. They are eating them like pros now. They arent picking them up yet though, I have to pop them in their mouths.

Mine were preemies so we started a little later with them, but they had cheerios and puffs at 9 months. My oldest DD had cheerios around 7.5/8 months.

we started cheerios last week. Mine are 6 months. They much prefer foods with texture and that they can gum. They do really well with them. We basically skipped the baby food stage and went to table foods.

Dax just started doing well with the puffs. Up until a couple of days ago he was trying to swallow them whole and was gagging. I'm planning to try Cheerios next week sometime. They don't dissolve as quickly as the puffs and aren't as soft so that's why I'm waiting on them. We did the same with the girls.

A couple wks ago my pedi suggested offering Cheerios, since for the most part the babies turn up their noses at pureed foods. Haven't tried it yet, though.

you could also try getting them slightly mushy in formula/EBM and give them that way. I have a little box of cheerios I am going to try soon. we tried puffs last week and they are already little fiends for them. If they get one they want MORE NOW PUT IT IN MY MOUTH!
I am reserving them for out to dinner "entertainment"

I tired a puff on Beau and then about had a heart attack thinking he might choke.. So i dug it out of his mouth and gave him little to no chance to try... They seemed hard to me... so i am waiting till at least 7 months and we will try again...

Started puffs around 6 to 6 1/2 months and started cheerios around 7 months. They love those things. Mine now shovel by the handfuls...gotta watch them, but their gag reflex is really good.

when we fist did cherrios we would just let them sit in formula or milk first so they become softer. you can add me to the chicken group.

Are the puffs you are referring too the ones in the bag?? They have corn, veggie and others? Just chking. Haven't tried them yet with the twins but I was thinking about it. My twins are 8mths. Sounds like its alright to start from the posts I've read. Haven't tried Cherios yet ethier. Guess next week will be an adventure for us..we'll have a week full of new foods!!

    Thanks!

I haven't had the guts to try Cheerios yet but I have given these organic rice puffs I found. At first I was breaking them in half but now I realize they can mush them around in their little mouths and then swallow them just fine. I am so paranoid about choking! I think I'll hold off on Cheerios for now, even though it's probably irrational!

We started cheerios at around 7 months, now they get them every morning while I'm making bis sis breakfast and mushing their bananas. :) They each have 4 teeth, but they're not too crazy about cheerios - puffs are the big treat around here, we run out of a jug of puffs within days.

I haven't tried cheerios but they love they puffs, cherry is their favorite.

I had to start and then stop for a while (w/ the puffs) b/c I was also a big chicken due to them choking/gagging but they are fine now with them.

I would panick when they started to gag and would finger sweep their mouths which now that I reflect on it was worse (for them) than the actual gagging, adn the thing would have dissolved before they actually choked and stopped breathing.

They also love the arrowroot cookies and the biter biscuits, WHAT a mess they make, but they have fun?

We have begun to introduce Stage 3's and they have the same reaction (the gagging) but they just work through it. I read that babies have a stronger gagging reflex to aid in prevention of choking w/ foods.

I started with the Parents' Choice puffs in the tall canister (like a pringles container). They seems to dissolve quicker than the gerber puffs (I bought the package at Sam's that has three flavors, sweet potato, banana, and apple strawberry, and they're star shaped...these to me are a little crunchier so we did them after the PC puffs but before cheerios). :winking0009:

We had a HUGE puff emergency yesterday and completely ran out! Somehow we mis-counted how many cans they'd gone through. It was touch and go there for a minute, but we gave them some cheerios and they LOVED them! Whew! That should also save us some money on puffs I think. :)
