Since DS gave up his paci about 3 weeks ago he always has chapped lips. I think maybe he is sleeping with his mouth open. I've been putting chap stick on him as often as I can and before bed time, but it doesn't seem to really help. Anyhone have any suggestions?

Blake has chapped lips occassionally and this is what we use. I love the smell and it seems to work really well when I use it.

Trish, your avatar is ADORABLE...Ryan's such a casual, suave big boy! :)

I swear by Cortaid. You can find it in the first-aid section of a grocery/drug store. Cortaid is 1% Hydrocortisone OINTMENT (don't get the cream). A dermatologist recommended it to me when I was on a medication that caused perpetually dry, chapped lips. It works wonders.

I also use it on dry, chapped hands, and all cuts. It's like my own personal version of the Windex in My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding.

Awe thanks! It was his GQ moment for the year. I won't show you the 50 or so pictures before and after that one that came out a total disaster. LOL!

My DS has had horrible chapped lips as well. Not sure if it is due to giving up the paci or what. At his 3 year checkup I mentioned his lips to the doc and she said he was probably a lip licker. I hadn't noticed before but since the appointment I've seen that he does lick his lips a whole lot. She recommended Aquaphor and it does seem to have cleared it up (when he'll let me put it on).

Nolan's had them too. He's a lip licker. I bought them some chapstick, but he is still pretty chapped. Maybe I'll try that J&J stuff that Nicole suggested.

The dentist assured me that severely chapped lips are the result of an overabundance of candida yeast in the mouth. He gave DD a tube of Nystatin ointment. That stuff is like a miracle. It's a chronic problem, so we apply it once or twice a day after meals now. It cleared up almost all the way the first day we used the ointment.

I asked him (since this is a prescription product) if it was like the ringworm stuff. He said, "Kind of" with a funny look on his face that made me think what it's really like is the yeast infection stuff they sell but he didn't feel comfortable saying "monistat."

My DD suffers from the same thing. I notice that our house is dry, so I run the humidifier in their room and that helps a little. But, I also give them an Omega-3 supplement with DHA and that works. HTH. Sounds like you have a lot of great things to try and see what works for you.

We are having the same issue with one of ours too. This weekend I started using Vitamin E capsules (they are cheaper than the oil). I make a hole in the capsule and put a dab on the irritated place. Vitamin E is great for scars and burns too.

Andrew breathes through his mouth when he is sick and the sides of his mouth crack open. The only thing that helps is vaseline and blistex medicated lip stuff. For "normal" dry lips I used the Johnson's soothing naturals moisture stick on their lips, cheeks, noses, etc. HTH :)
