i have a feeling my LO has screaming fits because they become overtired. HOWEVER she burps very frequently, spits up like crazy (reflux) and then screams and screams and screams until she falls asleep. im wondering if this is 'colic' or gas? i was wondering if chamomile tea might work? friend used it and said it was amazing, lol? not sure how much to give or what to do.
At 6 wks old I wouldn't give anything like that without talking to a dr first. Their tummies are not ready to digest anything more than formula and breastmilk. I even worry about adding rice cereal in so early. But really, trying something like chamomile tea I think I'd definitely have to discuss it with my dr first.
ok, ty. my pedi told me no rice cereal; the gastro told me to give it this poor kid. always burping, spitting, fussy, pumping legs....idk what to do i was EBF her; now she's on alimentum.
Anytime you change her feeds, what you are feeding her, are you giving it at least a week before changing it again? Because it can take that long to get the allergen/issue out of their system and get the new stuff into their system and give their body a chance to decide whether it's okay with the new stuff or not. Seems like you've been switching formula and adding/subtracting a lot of stuff over the last couple of weeks, and that might be upsetting her tummy too. Some of her fussing could be growth spurt too, as 6 wks is a prime time for growth spurt. Also colic is often diagnosed at this time. Colic is defined by crying at least 3 hrs a night, at least 3 nights a week, for several weeks in a row. My twin daughter had colic, and it wasn't diagnosed until she was 4 months old. But starting around supper time, she would start crying, and not much would calm her down. We alternated who rocked/snuggled/fed/burped/bounced her each night. So it's possible yours is starting with colic as well.
I would definitely give her time to adjust to the different formula, etc. That said... My mother in law is from Italy, and that would be the first thing she would have suggested. They all would in Italy! But it's also a different culture too. They "swear by it."
she's been on the formula for about 3 weeks. she's on alimentum and i've taken the rice cereal out of the bottles. the GI told me to put the cereal in but my pedi suggested not to. she definitely does not scream for 3 hours; she's just difficult to calm and console. it usually takes about 15 mins but feels like hours. she still spits A LOT
That sounds a lot like my boys were at that age.....we tried the chamomile tea, but it didn't seem to help much. What helped us was a combination of Nutramigen, cereal in the bottles, and medicine for reflux (we tried Zantac, but it didn't help, so we switched to Prevacid, which REALLY helped). We also did the other things they tell you to try for reflux: prop up the bed, hold them upright for 30-45 minutes after feedings, etc. Eventually they outgrew it, thankfully. Hang in there - it WILL get better.
It doesn't sound like it's colic then....and really 15 mins is good!! Rylee would literally scream for hours, unless she was snugged right up against us and we were bouncing/walking/jogging around/swaying....etc, and even then, I still think she would just exhaust herself to sleep for 15 mins or so before starting again. The spitting up a lot is just a laundry issue unless she's not gaining weight. I do agree that prevacid worked better than zantac did, and it's worth a call to the ped about changing meds.
I would listen to the gi since he's a specialist and the pedi isn't. We didnt give the girls any tea till they were around 2 when they were teething. Like everyone has said it takes the tummies a while to adjust
we hold her up for 30 mins - even at 4 am when I'm ready to die. as soon as we lay her down, she gags, burps, spits up. she's gaining a great amount of weight. she's 9.5 lbs right now. i'll ask about the prevacid; for the zantac - we are on .4mL 3x a day and she drinks alimentum.
Yes, it is a cultural thing. Here in Germany giving chamomile or fennel tea to soothe an upset tummy even for a newborn is absolutely standard too, I would not even have thought of asking my pedi about it ...
