I've been reading several threads about cervix size, funneling, and bedrest. Obviously, my goal is to go as full term as possible and to avoid bedrest. But, despite having 4 singletons already, I am completely oblivious to a shrinking or funneling cervix......not sure I want to plug that into google search, but thought I'd ask here. I just registered so I could post and join in on the conversations :D . I am about 16-17 weeks and it looks like possibly both girls--and the placenta is either fused or just one--but there are definitley 2 sacs (sacks?). I go back to my new OB on May 15th [I just met her on my first visit where she discovered 2 babies in her ultrasound!!! SURPRISE!!] and have had one ultrasound with a tech, but I had no idea what info I really needed to know yet--this twin thing is a WHOLE new ballgame!!

Yes, it is a new ballgame! I knew nothing of shortening or funneling either until I was pregnant with twins! And I also did not find out until later in the game at my routine 21 week u/s!

My cervix started off around 5cm, at least that is what it was at the 21 week u/s. At 26 weeks, it had shortened or effaced to 2.5, and there was funneling. So in other words, your cervix starts out thick, thins out, and then opens(dilates), or at least that is how it is supposed to happen before you go into labor. Funneling is when it starts to open from the inside, forming a V. The sac(s) can then get pushed down into that V and it can cause PROM(premature rupture of membranes). I was on bedrest for shortening/funneling for 9 weeks.

Anyway, hopefully you won't have to worry about it! Congrats on your twin pregnancy!

I had no idea either until this twin pregnancy. My cervix stayed super long 6cm until they stopped checking me at 29 weeks. Then they figure it starts to thin and funnel but they are not scared at that point. I made it to 37 weeks with no bedrest and no cervix problems so everyone is different!

I am not sure of the exact measurement this last time- but all the other times they've said it was 4cm. And every time they've told me it was 'beautiful' LOL

Thanks so much for the info!!
I guess I've never had trouble before--I just know the growing pains and stretching has started so much earlier, just wondering if that'll go toward my cervix also. SO many questions for my OB this time! I went 40-42 weeks with my other 4, so hopefully we can make it to 38-40+ :D All for hoping and prayer!!!
