Cervix length

I had cervix scan on Friday (27w4d). It was 2.75. Is it too short? My doctor didnt seem worried. He said its ok for twins. Plus, the u/s didnt show I had contraction, no signs of preterm labor. He said its tightly closed. Hes happy with my babies growth and everything. I used to have cervix scan every 2 weeks. Now, my doctor wants to scan my cervix after 3 weeks. I hope 2.75 is ok.

 

I am no doc, but that seems borderline to me. Mine at that point was 2-2.5 and I was on complete bedrest. The problem with cervical length is that it can change so quickly. It would make me very nervous to go 3 weeks without checking. I have mine checked every week. (Or I did, until 32 weeks when the measurement stops being reliable.)

I am on modified bedrest & meds due to PTL (contrax) and my cervix has been checked weekly since 27 wks and has always been around 3.8-4cm. This past week at 30 weeks it measured shorter just under 3cm but my doc wasn't too concerned. She said to be expected with twin pregnancy but we will still check it every week. It makes me nervous that it shortened but my fFetalfibronectin test was negative at the end of 29 wks which she said is good. I would maybe call with your concern and to give you peace of mind to have it checked before another 3 weeks.

Sunny in Seattle - at 32 weeks the cervix measurement is unreliable? Could you tell me more about what your doc says about that? Did they stop measuring you then?

 

my OB puts twin moms on bedrest at 2.5 so that would be borderline to my OB too. What were your previous measurements? Have you always been about 2.75? if so then its probably okay but if it has been gradually shortening then I would probably do some self prescribed bedrest at home... as much as you can. I would be nervous to wait 3 weeks as well. I get checked every 2 weeks and that makes me nervous!

 

Why is it docs have such different opinions?!?

My Peri says anything over 2 is good, and he only checks every 4 weeks via u/s. I was told that my last check (at 25 weeks) would be my last cervix u/s because "you will almost be 30 weeks (I'll be 29w2d) at your next growth u/s and the cervix measurement is unreliable after 30 weeks".

Argh!

 

Your due date is very close to mine. Mine is may 31. I am having b/g twins. I forgot to ask my previous number. But my high risk specialist seemed happy with all the numbers. He said the important thing is that my cervix was tightly closed, no sign of tissue passed through, and between my cervix and baby head, there was a lot of tissue blah blah.. So I wasnt worried at that time. I will have appointment with my OB tomorrow. I will ask.

 

Momof2+2 -- My doc said that past 32 weeks, there are no more scientific standards to which you can compare cervical length, so there's no point in checking. It's policy at this practice to stop the transvag ultrasounds at 32 weeks. One of my friends who has twins said her doc stopped checking at 20 weeks. :unknw: It is definitely weird that doctors have different opinions on this... it surprises me about how much is not known about twin pregnancies! My doc tends to be very proactive, lots of monitoring and precations taken with hospitalization and bedrest. So I'm pretty confident about them not checking cervical length past 32 weeks. I think tomorrow (34 weeks) she'll be checking manually for dilation instead.

 

Up till this point, I have only ever had normal u/s but at my next one, the doc wants to check cervix. Dorry if this is a dumb question, but is this done internally?

My RE always looks at my cervix on the abdominal ultrasound, but I remember during the first one he said that normally the cervix length looks a little longer on the abdominal one and you get a more accurate reading from doing the internal U/S. At that time, my Cervix was measuring 3.3 on abdominal and 3.0 internal. It has remained in the low 3's since then and he has only done the one internal...he has only checked from the abdomen since that one time. I'm not sure when they start doing the dilation checks (can't remember when I was preg with my daughter).
