Hi all -- my cervix was measuring 5.5 three weeks ago, at 28 weeks....now it's at 3.5, at 31 weeks. Should I be worried?

The u/s tech didn't think anything of it, and said it's still within normal parameters....also, she didn't use the u/s wand vaginally today, just over the belly, because she said my bladder was full enough to get a good measurement.

I'm dubious, because my last u/s was at the peri's office, done by his nurse -- and that one *was* done vaginally. So, I don't know if today's measurement could be off.

If not, though, is it okay if I wait 'til Monday's OB appointment to ask about it? Or, should I do something (what?) in the interim?

    Thanks!

ps -- all else looked well. Baby A is still vertex, and measuring about 3 pounds, 13 oz. Baby B, the little stinker, has turned transverse -- I thought he was poking me funny! -- and is measuring about 4 pounds.

Mine has consistently measured 3.5 cm and the u/s tech has always said over 3cm is great. Honestly, at this point in your pregnancy you want it to start thinning out some; and it is normal for it to thin as the pregnancy progresses. At 31 weeks and over 3cm, I would still say that you have a "cervix of steel"!

3.5 is a great measurement. I don't think you should be worried, but you could always call your specialist & see what he/she thinks.
    Great luck to you,

    Hi Becca,

At this stage in the game, your cervix will start changing. So, I would just try to rest more, lay down more, taking that pressure off of your cervix. There could definately be a difference in measurements between vaginally and on the belly. Vaginal u/s are more accurate. At 31 weeks, I was around 2.5, and 1cm dialated. The weights sound great!

All my peri cared was that at 30 weeks it was still at 2cm or over (which mine wasn't). After 30 weeks he said he rarely measures length. Sounds to me like you are doing fantastic!

Thanks, you guys! I won't worry then, will just continue to take it easy, and run it by my OB on Monday. Whew!

3.5 at 31 weeks is a great measurement. It will start to shorten in preparation for labor.

Your measurements really sound great! If it makes you feel any better, I went from 4.7 cm to 2.0 cm in a matter of 2 weeks! The change was noticed at about 26 weeks, and I am now 32wks, 5days, and still holding strong at 2.0 cm despite lots of contractions. I have been on modified bed rest for several months, and have been especially careful ever since I found out that my cervix had shortened. I think 3.5 is an awesome length at 31 weeks, though. Hang in there, and best of luck to you!

[SIZE=10pt]Wow Becca ~ not only do we have the same due date...but our cervix lengths are right on also. Your lil ones are growing a little more than mine though. My PERI said that it was a great length (I had a vaginal U/S to check though) My lil ones are...Baby A 3lbs8oz and Baby B 3lbs5oz. Are you doing/eating/taking anything extra to increase weight?

Glad to hear that you had a good appt. Keep us updated on what your OB says on Monday.

    April :)

April, remember that u/s measurements can be off by a full pound in either direction -- even the tech told me to take them with a grain of salt. And, my babies were measuring a tad ahead, so it sounds like your munchkins are right on track. Don't worry!

That said, I admit I've been eating with total abandon during this pregnancy -- I've been downing protein shakes every day, plus eating a ton of steak, burgers, chicken, etc. And, I've been eating a lot of junk, too -- consuming full-fat ice cream like you wouldn't believe, LOL. I guess I've been lucky (?) that my appetite hasn't waned at all, even this far along.

I was diagnosed with IUGR in my first pregnancy, so I've been super careful about putting weight on this time -- and, the Barbara Luke book scared me a bit. The good news is, all the eating seems to be helping the babies grow. The bad news is, I've put on 50 pounds already, and I was somewhat overweight to begin with....so, I will have one heck of a time taking it off later!

How funny if your kiddos come on July 4th! That's our wedding anniversary, actually. I hope mine come right around the same time....although it seems SO far away right now....
