Cervical shortening at 25 weeks, now on bed rest.

I had another appointment with my perinatologist Friday. No gender change, still two girls! They’re both growing fantastically and right on track for gestational age, weighing in at 1.6 lbs and 1.65 lbs. And both are head down!

My cervix, on the other hand, isn’t doing so well. :( At my last check, it was 35mm. They said it should still be at least 30mm at this point, and it’s down to 21mm. They’ve put me on partial bed rest. She said, “I know it won’t be easy since you have to little ones to look after.” My thoughts, exactly! But, we’ve already started rallying the troops and my aunt, mil, and sil are already asking what they can come help me do. *sigh* It’s just so hard for me to sit and let someone else do “my work”. I can't fathom that this is going to be easy. I go back in 2 weeks for another cervical check. I hope it's no different, as if it continues to shorten, I imagine they'll put me on full bed rest.

I also have to go into my regular doc next week and get 2 steroid shots for lung development (one each day for two days) "just in case".

I’m very thankful that the girls are growing well and everything is looking great with them, I was really worried about the whole growth discrepancy thing (TTTS). I was hoping, though, to sail through this without any complications

Would love to hear some other experiences in this!

Here's my experience. At 26 weeks, cervix shortened to 3 cm and told to take it easy and not go back to work. At 30 weeks was put on full bedrest. My cervix had shortened to 1 cm and I was having uterine irritability and some bh contractions. I was put on procardia to help stop the irritabiltiy and bh. DH did everything, I only got up to go to the bathroom. I delivered at 34 weeks and 2 days. I did not have two little ones like you to take care of, but I would definitely have your family come and help out. It is vital for you to carry your babies as long as possible. Good luck to you!

I'm sorry to hear you are on bedrest but I am glad that they caught it.:hug99: Take it easy and keep your feet up like they want you too!

I had a friend whose situation was similar to yours...she was in and out of the hospital from about 26 weeks or so...put on partial bedrest, and then admitted to the hospital for a week or so to be monitored. I know that all sounds discouraging, but she ended up delivering at 37w 3d...two healthy girls. Hang in there...I'll be praying for you and your little beans :)

Sounds like you ahve a great suppport system. As hard as it is, let people help and do everything for you. I spent 6 weeks on strict bedrest at home but it was much better than if I had been in the hospital. Just listen to your doc and do your best to do nothing... xoxoxoxo

Not the best of news but it's great you have the support. Don't feel guilty or that you "should" be doing all this stuff because it's "yours" your job right now is to bake those babies. Relax and take advantage of all the help.

I'm glad your dr. is being cautious and proactive about your care (hugs)

Do they measure cervix length from an Ultrasound, or an actual physical exam?

They do it transvaginally with u/s

Sorry to hear that you are on partial bedrest, but at least they caught things when they did. Hopefully the babies will stay out for a long time still :)

as hard as it may be, accept the help that you can and do not over do it

Good luck and try to get alot of rest :hug99:

I also went on modified bedrest at 25 wks and had to quit my full time job. I had an u/s that showed my cervix length was short (can't remember exactly how short) and I was having the bh contractions regularly. So I thought for sure I would have to be on bedrest until the babies came. Amazingly enough, at around 30wks I had another U/S and things were looking stable, my cervix length was totally fine and the bh contractions weren't out of control. My dr. let me be more active and I was able to work just a couple hours a day which was a world of difference. So I don't know if there was some sort of fluke in my situation, but you never know. I seemed to be more stable after 5 wks of bedrest. I totally understand how you feel about other people cleaning and doing errands for you. I was exactly the same way. Just do your best and try to stay positive. I had to think to myself that I was quitting my full time job at the office and taking on a full time job of keeping the babies inside of me for as long as possible. Good luck with everything and hang in there:)

I was put on strict bedrest at 24 weeks, first in the hospital for a week, then back at home. I was measuring 2.8cm with contractions, and that is why they wanted me in the hospital; to get those contractions under control. It was really hard at first, but you just do what you have to do. Don't be afraid to accept the help--you will need it!!! Unfortunately I had to go back to the hospital at 28 weeks, with my cervix measuring 1.8cm, despite strict bedrest. But I just wanted you to know that it can be done. I delivered two healthy babies in the end, and that is all that matters.

Have you had an fFN test yet?

Definitely let others do everything for you. It's hard, but let them do it. Bedrest at home is much better than in the hospital, which is where you could definitely land if you don't lay low. I spent a total of 15 weeks on bedrest, 4+ of them in the hospital, due to a short cervix and an emergency cerclage at 16 weeks.

I am on bedrest now. I do have an incompetent cervix and a cerclage placed. I was doing great until two weeks ago...I was down to 2.3. Went in 4 days later and was down to 1.5!!! I was on modified bedrest for those days.

I have been on strict bedrest since then (I am still up about 45 minutes a day for bathroom, shower and microwaving when dh isn't home) and my cervix lengthend again to 2.0!!!!

I am guessing it will be bed rest for the duration, but is has been helping. I am just hoping to avoid the hospital for as long as possible.
