I go tomorrow for my 20 week appointment and was wondering when did the doctor start checking your cervix. I had a pelvic exam at my intial 8 week appointment but i haven't had one since. I guess the hormones are just kicking it in to high gear now and I am starting to worry about stuff. But I figured with PTL being a possible issue the should check sometime soon right?

They started checking my cervix with the internal ultrasound around 20 weeks.

The peri I went to started at 17w with all multiple pregnancies. It actually caught me off guard that they were planning to do it that early, but since I had my two early, I am very glad they did. :good:

Hmmm... they have been checking mine at every ultrasound. No internal ultrasound or internal checks period. The ultrasound tech just takes a measurement of it. Mine is getting longer, not shorter....

They only checked my cervix at my 24 week appt because of the pressure complaint I had.

But I would not want someone poking around down there unless they really need too.

I didn't have any real risk factors so they didn't do the first check until 32 weeks and lo and behold I was dilated and rushed off to l&d. who knows how long I was dilated previous to that...

I dont think its something that needs to happen all the time. Mine was checked at 20 and at 28 as part of my anomaly scan and growth scan at the Maternal Fetal Medicine Centre. I wouldnt say that your OB needs to be doing it constantly but they should establish that your cervix is long and tightly closed at some point. I think its pretty standard with twins pregnancies.

They've been checking mine all along. I had the 8 week pelvic exam and I've had it checked by transvaginal u/s maybe 3x, I believe. I am only 20w3d. I'd honestly rather have it checked than wonder about it. The transvaginal u/s is very quick. Doesn't disturb anything.

They didn't check mine until 25 weeks when I was having about 10 contractions an hour with internal ultrasound, then they checked every week. Over the last month they have checked twice a week by feeling.

My peri started checking it via vaginal ultrasound at 17 weeks and told me that they need to check it every 2 weeks until 24 weeks.

Mine started doing them around 16 weeks and I see my Dr. monthly for my check ups right now. It doesn't really hurt or anything, he doesn't use a speculum, just does a quick finger check. They also check them at the ultrasounds which I've been having weekly at this point. But before that it was monthly ultrasounds.

I had one at around 25 ish or so weeks because I went in with some cramping. Other than that he hasnt checked it since. I get an u/s every few weeks but unless they can check it with just the tummy wand and dont say anything then I am assuming he doesnt check. I did ask one time and he said he wont really start examining until at least 32+ because he doesnt like to check if he doesnt have a reason to because he doesnt want to disturb anything.

Same here...I haven't had an internal check yet, judging from some of these responses maybe I will at my appointment on Friday since I'll be 31.5 weeks. They do an u/s at every appointment so maybe they are checking then, although it's never been mentioned.

  16. I've been checked with internal ultrasound since I was about 10 weeks. Every time they check, they ooh and ahh about the cervical length and then they tell me push and I usually get a "woah nelly." -quirky peri's I guess.

I was checked via belly ultrasound until 34 weeks - then checked manually. I dread it every week. Yuck yuck yuck.

I think mine started checking mine at like 16 or 18 weeks along every two weeks and then starting at I believe 22 weeks or so they started FFN tests every two weeks until I was I think 34 weeks along. If you are concerned about PTL an FFN test is more accurate then an cervical length check. Mine does them on everyone starting at 22 weeks every two weeks if you have a multiple pregnancy or are high risk. Basically this stuff will start to leak out if you going into labor and they put a swab in (not painful) to check for the stuff. If there is nothing then you have like a 99% chance that you will not deliever within the next two weeks. A negative test meaning that there was no fluid is more accurate then a positive. If you are concerned I would request an FFN test just to ease your mind.

I didn't get a cervical check until my 35 week appt, two weeks ago. I was 1-2 cm and 70%effaced..

I didn't want to get checked any sooner, it isn't exactly fun, haha!
