I still rarely do it... I started solids at 6 months and I give them breakfast (they've had dinner maybe three times since and only twice there was cereal in it). It doesn't help mine sleep at all, if anything they always seem to wake up more when I give them dinner... like last night I gave them some and they were up at 9pm and 3am... when they usually sleep through until 5am at least... And DS refuses to eat plain cereal anyway, DD will eat anything though.

Honestly I think that sleeping through doesn't have much to do with what they eat during the day.

Someone told me you start them about 2-3 months and I didn't think that sounded right but I thought I'd ask you all....

Depending on who told you, a lot of people think putting cereal in the last bedtime bottle helps babies sleep longer. I never tried this so I don't know if this is true. I know sometimes they suggest this for reflux babies but otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

I started rice cereal at just over 4 months old and we did it periodically for "dinner" until about 5 months when we started adding in veggies/fruits (was still followed by a bedtime bottle). Added breakfast at 6.5 months and lunch at 8 months.

Here's the American Academy of Pediatrics on starting solids:

There are have been many, many studies on starting solids and sleeping through the night and none have been able to show that introduction of solids helps babies sleep through.

I never did cereal until I introduced solids. It will NOT make them sleep longer- total myth. I know some use it for reflux, but we did not have reflux. At around 4 1/2 or 5 months I introduced rice cereal and only did it for a few days because Sofia hated it.

I'm not worried about the sleeping I was just worried they are always hungry.....they are already eating 6-7 oz every 2.5 - 3 hours and I was worried it might be cause they aren't getting enough from the milk and someone suggested cereal but I wasn't sure I thought it might be to early also

we just started giving cereal to the girls and before we did Eve would wake up every 3-4 hours to eat and now she gets up once for a quick bottle then back to sleep til 8am--I think the cereal "helped" her feel more full as her last meal before bed she is still only less then 13 lbs at 5 months old and needs to gain so i dont mind getting up. Only give her a big tbsp of rice cereal or oat cereal and she loves it! formula first-6 oz at 6 or 7pm then cereal at 7:30 or 8pm i mix all my cereals with 1 or 2 oz of formula instead of water its creamier and more formula in her tummy that i have a hard time getting her to drink more then 5-6 oz a feed.
her sister is 14+ lbs and SSTN. I would Try the cereal before bed-see if it works for you-at 2 months thou its a bit soon-4 months is probably better they wont spit it out as much and can hold themselves up to eat.

Mine are about to be 4 months and the pedi told me to give them one spoon of cereal morning and evening. I give it to them for their last feed and their first feed of the day and they´re fine. They´re drinking about 5-6oz per feed every 4 hours (not inc nights as they sttn). My DD also spits up a lot but since being on anti-reflux formula and having the cereal, things are staying down better.

We did one tablespoon before bed around ten weeks. However, I don't think that helped them sleep thru the night, they did that on their own. I do think it helped them be full through the night, so they are not quite ravenous when they wake in the morning :)
