Up until the last two weeks - our girls have been totally breastfed. Well, at daycare they were taking in more than I could pump. Thus, at daycare, I told our provider to give them one bottle of formula a day. So - each baby gets a total of two formula bottles a week (I only work two days a week - usually) For the last 7 days Ellie hasn't poo'd. She hadn't acted constipated, but she just hadn't poo'd. I was starting to worry. I was going to give her juice if she didn't go today. About an hour ago Ellie started screaming. Ellie never cries. When she gets upset she just shoves her thumb in her mouth and deals with it. Well she started screaming. I picked her up to see what was wrong. Then she stopped breathing and was turning bright red/purple. I was about to call 911 when she finally wheezed and I heard this weird pop come from her diaper. Then she was fine for a second. She then did it all again - with the diaper "pop" also. My two older children never took formula. Even the twins have never really had formula more than once a month, and Ellie would never take it (she still doesn't like to take it) - thus I have never had to deal with constipation or formula poo before! I ran Ellie over to the non carpeted floor and started to change her. The smell was HORRIBLE! It was GREEN! It was the consistancy of soft serve icecream!!!! Well, I am changing her (took half a box of wipes!) when - with nothing under her but the floor - she went again!!! I honestly don't think I have ever seen anything as gross as a soft green poo coming out of my little sweet things bum! I have had plenty of accidents with bm poo's - those don't phase me, but this stuff was NASTY! And there was SOO MUCH OF IT!! UGH. I think I now have post traumatic stress disorder! I am going to try pumping more so we don't have to give them anymore formula - that was just NASTY!
My boys are formula fed. I wonder if it is her body trying to get used to it. What is strange to me is that it was so difficult to come out and she was pushing so hard that but in the end it was soft. I have a question...did you see any hard piece in the mix of all the soft. When my boys used to get consipated, they would push, cry, scream, turn red. The piece would be so large that I had to chip it away with a thermometer. AFter that initial piece came out, soft poop would follow. I am just wondering if initially it was hard to get the big/hard piece out. If so, you would want to know what to do if it happens again. WHen I would hear that scream, I always checked their diaper to see it they were having that problem. After it happening many times, I put them in the tub and that tends to soften it up. I hope it does not happen again for her
There could have been a cap - there was so much in that diaper that it could have started out that way and had the "soft serve" behind it. It was truely gross. We have always been really lucky in that none of my kids have ever had to "work" to go #2. It really scared me at first until I realized what had happened (I am so glad I didn't call 911 - I sure would have felt like an idiot getting an ambulance out here for a poo!) I really think I am going to tell daycare to just give a bottle to baby b - that way baby a can have a little bit of time to get thing back in order.
 OMG - I'm sorry, but that cracked me up! Yeah, the iron in the formula usually makes their poo green, and she was probably grunting because formula poo is really "sticky" compared to bm poo. It just doesn't want to come out! You also probably noticed an increase in the amount because formula contains a lot of fillers and thickeners and all that stuff has to come out somewhere. I sorry her formula poo gave you PTSD! :shok:
I was never able to give breast milk so all I know is the green soft serve poop. Now it has changed into adult like balls of poop that vary in color due to what they eat. Hope her little system is okay and also hope that Mom has caught her breath!!
  Yes, I know what you mean, ours are formula fed, and the poo you describe, is very familiar.LOL :icon_biggrin:
