I know this is probably a stupid question but I am just curious. Can your water break if your not showing any signs of labor such as not being dialated at all, no thinning or anything like that. If any one can answer this question please leave me a little info.

Yes, it definitely can. I was a fingertip dilated (although I have been told that anyone that has had a child before is always a fingertip dilated). My water broke at 38 wks and I had no signs or symptoms of it happening...

I started having contrax about 2 hours after my water broke.

    Mine did, 37w 0d

ETA: no prior contractions, mild contractions started about 1/2 hour later. Baby A delivered 5 hours later

I was wondering this same thing. I don't understand how the fluid can get through if you're not dialated at all. Maybe thats a stupid question, but I don't get it.

The fluid gets through just like your period does. My water never broke on it's own with any of mine, contractions always started first and the docs broke them.

Yeppers, I had just had an internal u/s that day and wasn't dialated at all that night my water broke and I went into labour a week later.

Not a stupid question, yes it can happen but extremely unlikely cause your plug needs to be gone or partly gone for the fluid to escape or leak. In all my time working on an ambulance and at the hospital, I have never personally seen it happen.

Yes, mine did. I was not even 1 centimeter dialated.i had been having contractions but they weren't changing my cervix. My water breaking was a complete surprise to everyone.

Mine did with my son Owen. I had just been at the doctor's for my checkup (I was full term) but she checked & said I was not dilated at all & said "nothing is imminent". I was so upset because I was so ready to have him. Two hours later my water broke & labor started about two hours after that. There really was no warning at all.

Mine did break before I dialated at all, I think I started dialating 2 or 3 hours later and then I delivered 13 hours later. My contractions were intense within 30 minutes of my water breaking.

you can have leaks which are technically broken waters-- it happened to me in both my pregnancies-- if you think you've got amniotic fluid coming out- go to your dr/hospital immediately- don't mess with it!!

With my DS, I lost my mucous plug at 33 weeks. Nothing happened after that. I had an appt. with my OB at 35w3d and was still completely closed, no thinning, no contractions, etc. I felt fine. Two days later I woke up in the middle of the night with a "feeling". My water broke 15 minutes later (close to 5am) and I went into active labor immediately. I had contractions 2-3 minutes apart lasting 60-90 seconds. I had no MILD labor. Ugh! I was 5cm dialated when I got to the hospital 2 hours later. He was born at 2:03pm
