Bananas slow thing down...what else? So far we've done cereal, avacado and apple sauce. Diapers are changing...frequent but small and hard? What do I need to know?

Stools definitely change once you start solids. Once my girls got through trying all the fruits and veggies, I got my girls into a habit of having the Gerber pureed prunes with their cereal for breakfast all the time. We then moved to stage 2 prunes/apples and they have been very regular (sorry if that's TMI). Think of a BRAT diet when you have a tummy bug: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. So you know off the bat those are constipating. I think it's different for babies because my SIL would tell me about foods that would constipate my nieces that didn't constipate my girls.

Mine get a bit hard once in awhile and i just throw a jar of prunes into the mix and AWAY WE GO!! Be careful maybe dont feed it right before bed because you could have a very messy morning jammie change!! :nea:

When they are first starting solids, it seems like everything stops them up! I actually didn't worry about it as long as they were pooping once a day, even if the poops were hard, unless they seemed to be uncomfortable (which was rare).

Of the first foods, in addition to bananas, rice cereal is very constipating. I still feed it to my girls when they have diarrhea. So if it's a problem, you might want to switch to oatmeal. Applesauce is also constipating (although, paradoxically, apple JUICE will make them poop), but pears have the opposite effect, so I used to alternate the two.

The constipation seemed worst from about 9-15 months (probably because we added cheese & dairy to their diet), but has gotten better since then.

Thank you so much. I was kind of embarrassed to post this but we're having some trouble with the boys having hard, difficult to pass poops. James was crying today, trying to poop, which has never happened before (tried bananas for the first time yesterday). I guess I'll have to make some pureed prunes to give them each day.

oddly enough NOTHING constipates my kids...they poop 3x a day - morning, afternoon and evening regardless of what they eat!

Usually any of the "P" fruits and veggies will unstop them. Peaches, prunes, plums, pears, peas and such. I was giving DS apple prune juice when he was stopped-up and it worked great, I diluted it with a little water. Usually in 2 hours tops he was going.

    Rice/rice cereal
    bananas
    applesauce
    cheese
^ Those are the worst ones with my kids, rice being the biggest offender. I try fruit first and if that doesn't work, Little Tummies Laxative Drops.

You can also make sure they get oatmeal cereal every day. That will move things along well. Hope it gets a little better. :hug99:
