Can they always find the membrane?

I'm wondering if when you have an u/s, if they always are able to find the membrane between your twins?

They couldn't even find ours until 16 weeks, and even then, just for a second. (we also got u/s at 8 and 12 weeks, and 18 too)

Now, every time they don't see it, they assume our smaller baby is "shrink wrapped" in the sac, so that's why they can't see it, but I wonder if maybe the membrane could be there somewhere?

just wondering... ours appear to be identical, as well, so that may make it harder, but i'm not sure...

I had identical girls that were monoamniotic - they did not have a membrane and shared the same amniotic sac. We never saw a membrane and we looked every week. I went inpatient at 26 weeks and was monitored 24/7 and delivered at 32 weeks via a scheduled c-section. they don't recommend mono twin going past 32 weeks.

If you would like more info - let me know.

Good luck and I hope they find that membrane.

We see it very clearly. My twins are fraternal (fertility treatments) and the membrane is very thick between them.

We've only seen the membrane when having an u/s at our peri's office. My ob does an u/s at every visit, but her machine can't pick it up. Are you having your u/s' at a peri's office?

my drs think that my girls are identical and the u/s tech told me that there is a very small window of time when the membrane is visible. there were a couple of different appointments that they could not find it, and one where it was really clear. now you can see it pretty easily the farther along i get.

We saw mine on two of the six ultrasounds! I guess it just depends. Ours was very thin according to the tech.

This is why I went to a peri. They couldn't see mine and thought that I would have "mo-mo" twins, like Debbie did. Thank goodness we finally found it. It was very thin. Mo-mo twins, that is very scary!

One of my u/s has been at a peri (18 weeks). We're seeing a peri now and going back to them next week. I guess we'll see what happens then, I guess! I guess I thought it was kind of hard to see sometimes, especially if it was "floating" around and very thin...

eta: i think we are mo/di since we saw the membrane once, at least, right?

My boys are identical and share a placenta. We didn't know it was twins until 18wks (first u/s) and they couldn't find the membrane either. They immediately suspected TTTS and I have been having a weekly u/s ever since. Our "little guy" had no fluid until the 20th week. After he gained more fluid we could find the membrane, but they still have to search for it (even though his mvp is almost 5cm now at 24wks). I'm fortunate enough to have Dr. Quintero as my peri, so if you're looking into Tampa for TTTS treatment, PM me and I'll fill you in on the great staff there.
