Hi, i have a friend of the family having a singleton and she has just had her 12 wk scan last week.
The scan person told her she was having a boy.

I though sex couln't be determined until 18 or 20 weeks.

Does anyone know...my 12wk scan is net wed, and we are ecited to know if we are having girls or more boys
(lord help me if i end up with 4 boys!!)

When I had a scan at 13 weeks for bleeding they couldn't tell me the sex. Didn't find out until 19wk scan. The u/s tech said it was too difficult to tell when they were that small.

I have heard of a couple people finding out at 12 weeks.. BUT I have read that they genatails aren't even formed yet, but by 16 weeks they are.. we found out at 20 weeks.

I've read that the genitals are formed at 12 weeks, but they are rarely detected. You could probably ask the u/s tech to "guess", but I wouldn't take it as accurate. i had a friend who had a scan at 13 weeks and they tech "guessed" boy, but at 20 weeks they found out it was a girl. So, even if they give you a guess, I wouldn't go out shopping just yet...lol. Goodluck with your scan.

We found out at 14 weeks and they were accurate. However, we were at a MFM who had a 3D/4D ultrasound machine and a very skilled technician. She also said she couldn't say for sure at that point, but she was correct. So, that early will depend A LOT on the tech and the equipment and even then I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

I found out my one twin was a boy at 12 weeks and that the other one was a girl at 16 weeks and they were accurate. I think it depends on your u/s tech and all.

I agree with Becky! I would wait a little while to go shopping! I hope everything turns out well with your scan!

I found out at 14w 4d, but I was at a Level 2 ultrasound at maternal fetal diagnostics.

Possibly,(but I wouldn't paint the room or buy any clothes based on it) at my 13 w u/s they told me they thought baby B was a boy, because it was a little thick between the legs. Turns out baby B was boy, confirmed at my 17w u/s.

We didn't think too much of it at the time, but I thought it was neat when we found out for sure at 17w that they could tell so early.

I had a scan at 14 weeks for my older DS, and they knew he was a boy. Don't know about 12 weeks though.

What an approriate post for me. I am dying to know. I am almost 13 weeks and we have another us scheduled for tomorrow. I would love to be given a hint...I don't think I can wait for my level two at the end of October.

I think it is possible. I found out (with my ds) @ 12 weeks (during the nuchal fold testing/ us). According to the tech...it's easier to detect little boys this early than little girls (for obvious reasons, lol). Good luck at your u/s.

thanks girls... seems that depending on the us tech, boys might be picked up early...i think i just won't ask...i'd hate for it to be wrong...and i am already so ecited, picking up unisex baby clothes when i go out shopping...i can't help myself and also think it might help ease the burden of buying alot of clothes at once.

curious to know since we have similar due dates, why are you scheduled for bed rest?

I found out my di/di twins were boys at 16 weeks, but I was told that sex couldn't be determined before that.

I was told I was having ID girls at my 12 week scan, but also told to wait to go shopping yet because it was too early to be 100% sure. Turned out at my next u/s that they were in fact girls.

So we had the Us yesterday. I am 12 weeks 6 days. As we went in the asked the tech to please tell us if she saw anything. She said that she would never attempt to guess this early b/c sex can not be determined until at least 16 weeks. I was not happy. I bit my tongue to not mention the forum. I then asked the Dr. afterwards, and she said the same thing. Oh well!

i had my 12 wk scan and there was NO way the us tech could tell...i guess i'll just have to keep waiting.

I'm not sure about 12 wks, but we found out we were having fraternal boys @ 13wks. But the u/s tech did say that it's kind of unusual to be able to see 'anything' that early. But sounds like there are a # of variables involved besides #of wks.

i think they can tell i was 14w and 1 day and they said boy, i go to see the peri 2morrow and im going to see if he tells me boy as well. but ive also had friends that have been told at 13 and 14wks and they were right. so well see. im not shopping yet for anything until i know for sure...but is sure did look like a boy peepee to me. hehe My u/s tech said boys are easier determined earlier on, than girls are.

The ultrasound tech was able to tell me beyond a shadow of a doubt the sexes of our twins at 14 weeks 4 days. She was able to point them out on a tv screen hanging up in the room - and it was even obvious to me. HTH.

I was at my RE's office about 11w5d when he circled something on the screen with his pointer and got a big 'ole grin on his face. I said "what are you circling?" and he said, very coy, "I don't know." So, most techs and docs won't tell you if they do see something so early because it can be hard to determine but my RE knew. I didn't put alot of stock in it and waited for our 19wk u/s where they confirmed it was a "very obvious" penis on the screen. ;)

So, yes, I think they can tell sometimes depending on several factors but I think they are often afraid to say out of the possibility they could be wrong and someone might flip out if it changes. kwim?

I had an sono at 13 weeks to check for heartbeats-the sono tech said we couldnt hold her to this but she said baby A looked like a boy if she had to guess and she couldnt tell at all the sex of baby B. We had another sono at 17 weeks and sure enough baby A was a boy and baby B is a girl. Lucky guess!
I would say dont be too disappointed if they cant tell yet, you will surely have many other chances soon enough.

The ultrasound tech told me that girl parts are swollen during the early stages and can easily be mistaken for boy parts. She says she will not even try to determine sex before 18 weeks.
