I think it has somthing to do with that little monitor they put on your finger. I have wraps on my nails and for the summer when I had my girls I had a permanent french manicure and there was no problem. Just don't wear dark nail polish and I think you should be fine.

I also had no rings on but they also didn't fit by that time either.

You do have to take rings off. (Mine didn't fit by that time either, but when I had a d&c I had to take them off.) I never heard that about the nail polish, but then, I don't wear it, so no one would have mentioned it!

Yes, no jewelry. Rings, necklaces, body jewelry, etc. On the nail polish, I don't recall what my instructions were, but I do know that your nail beds are a good indication of proper circulation. At one time, they would remove nail polish but I am not sure that is the case any longer.

I do know that at our local hospital (Australia) - all jewels and nail/toenail polish is removed prior to surgery. Maybe things are done differently in different countries.

When I had my c-section with the twins...albeit NOT planned, but they did it within 2 hours of the time they checked me and said I was going to have one done...I was allowed to wear my ring and earrings into surgery. I also had my nails painted (it was my past time while on hospital bedrest) with a french manicure and I did not have to have that removed.

This time around, since it's a scheduled c-section, I'm leaving my jewelry at home (one less thing to worry about at the hospital).

I had to take all jewelery off. Like pp wedding rings didn't fit by then anyway. I didn't have fingernail polish so I'm not sure about that. I think I had my toenails done and they didn't say anything about that.

The no nail polish rule is so that they can keep an eye on your nail beds to check for discoloration (turning blue, etc).

The no jewelry rule comes from, if you need to be resuscitated (think jump start the heart with paddles....>CLEAR<...) having the metal on your body will cause a burn where the metal is.

It is in the best interest of you to listen, and follow all directions that you are given by the staff at the hospital.

I had to go back and take a look at my pics - I'm actually wearing my necklace with my wedding rings on it....I don't remember though - DH may have put it back on me after I got out of recovery...

Nail polish needs to be removed due to the object that gets put on your finger to monitor your heart. Depending on your doctor if you have acrlyc nails on, sometimes they will pop off the one they need.

As far as rings, they say they can interfere with the medical equipment. If you do not want to take off your wedding ring, or anniversary ring, let them know that it does NOT come off, and all they need to do is wrap your finger where your ring is with paper tape.

Everytime I have had a surgery, I have refused to take off my rings. What if something happens to me? I want my wedding ring and my anniversary ring on me. But that is my opinion.

If they litterly can not come off, just ask them to wrap it. :) HTH.

A pulse oximeter (device that goes on your finger) reads through skin and bone .... nail polish or acrylic nails should not affect the reading. I'm an ER nurse ... I certainly don't take off pt's nail polish, nor their acrylic nails when I'm assessing them in triage. You may want to check the policy at your hospital .... a lot of places have banned acrylic nails for employees due to infection control issues.

As far as having to be resuscitated, we do not take off folks rings, as a rule. I've never seen a problem with shocking folks/having burns, etc. When I worked ICU, we sent people's rings home with them, mostly because of swelling .... you don't want a ring cut off your finger, or your loved ones.

Having said that ... I agree with yaniah ... I think I'll keep mine with me. I'd rather have them there.

I think it depends on you hospitals proceedures. My hospital said to remove all jewelry EXCEPT wedding rings. Good thing since my hands swelled up overnight sometime in month 4 and I was never able to get them off again (until about 2 months after the babies were born)!! As far as nail polish goes I have never heard that one either. I would talk to your doctor about what the policies are at your hospital just to be on the safe side! Good luck! Twins are like a theme park ride that you never want to get off!!!

My ring didn't fit because my fingers were swollen at the time of birth.

I have always taken my contacts out during my sections and worn my glasses. I can't remember if it was required or just my preference.
