Buying them both the same toys?

Do you buy the same toy for each child or do you buy them something different? We haven't bought too many toys for the girls because they are using DS's baby toys. We did buy both of them glow worms, which we use during nap time. I was just curious if I should get 2 of the same toy or get them each something different. I don't want them to constantly fight over toys, but I want them to have a good variety of toys. So, what do you do (or plan on doing)?

We have some duplicates (2 strollers, 2 dolls, 2 bongo drums), but for big toys we have only one. The exception is the Cozy Coupe... We started out with one (that our neighbor gave us), and then my mom got another at a thrift store because they were fighting over it so much.

From expirience I would say get two of the popular toys. The phone was a big one, baby stroller (BRU has a cute twin stroller), hammer or any tools, microphone was popular, chef aprons (boy oh boy did they fight over that one). Other things you can get away with only one. GL!

I generally buy two of everything, but I have discovered only the first one really gets played with. They will fight over one when there is another identical toy sitting right beside them. So, I think I am going to try the one of a toy for a while and see how it goes.

We rarely got 2 of the same toy, and especially not when they were under the age of 18 months or so. It's pretty easy to redirect them when they're younger. Also, even if you have 2 of the same toy, they will invariably want the same one, so it doesn't help the fighting very much.

Now that they're a bit older, we do have 2 of several things, but we try to have them be similar rather than identical. It makes things much easier if we all know whose is whose. So, for instance, Amy has the green harmonica and Sarah has the blue one. Amy has the stuffed lion and Sarah has the stuffed puppy. And so on. If the toys are identical, it just means that both girls are convinced that whichever one is in sight is hers. But if we all know that a particular thing is Amy's, Sarah will rarely try to steal it from her (and vice versa).

Totally agree with this...now that mine are getting older, we generally have to buy two of something because they will fight over it but we buy similiar items, not necessarily identical so we can keep track of which item belongs to which child. It's amazing that they will each have a favorite and that then becomes that child's toy.

Looking around my house it seems like we only have 1 of most toys, and it is a problem with the popular toys. One toy in particular, the singing cookie jar, seems like it's constantly being fought over. It would be nice if we had a few of the same toy, but we don't. I don't think I've bought any of their toys, they were all given to us.
