Buying preemie clothes ahead of time?

Ok so they have 3 and 5 packs of preemie (only preemie size) onesies at Babies R Us for $2! They also had some adorable sleepers on clearance for about half price. Would it be too presumptuous of me to buy a few outfits, assuming the babies are going to be born (or come home) under 8 pounds? My son was 7.11 at birth and he was full term. I think I actually had 2 preemie outfits (as a suggestion from my SIL) that fit him really well for the first week.

Anyway, I am hoping to go as long as I can (hopefully 39 weeks!), but it seems like most twins are born around 34-38 weeks, so I'm assuming I'll need SOME preemie outfits. Yes? No? Thoughts?

At that price I don't see any reason not to. I wouldn't buy too many though. My girls were preemies, and didn't even use half of the preemie clothes that were bought for them.

I personally would hold off. Premie clothes only go up to 5lbs. I could see you buying newborn which goes 5-8lbs. Some of these twins being born have been good sizes and if yours are both in the 5lb weight or high 4lbs, your barely going to get any use out the premie sizes. I have a decent amt of newborn because the chances of them being over 8lbs seems to be unheard of. Most seem to fall between 4-7lbs, so I know I will get use out of them.

That's a good deal! I'd get some. My mom was convinced from the beginning that our babies will be preemies so we did buy some preemie onsies and sleepers. (and it is now quite likely we will not be making it full term, so good thing) Sometimes the babies are swimming in the newborn sizes. We got a lot of our stuff used so it wasn't a waste financially. If you don't use them, maybe you'll know someone who can or dontate them or sell them after.

I wouldn't. My DS was only 5 lb. and we had to run out and buy preemie clothes. No big deal, but I figured with twins, I would definately need P sizes so I bought a handful of things...well, I went to 38w5d and the girls were almost 7 lb. each! ANd the P stuff did NOT fit at all...so it was a total waste. If your babes need preemie stuff, you can always send someone out to buy something...otherwise you risk spending money you don't have to...

The best advice i got on this one (from someone here :)) was get a couple outfits but don't wash them or take off the tags. If you need them you got em, if not you can take them back and get something you really need (like diapers ;) ) I found even my singles could wear the smaller sizes for a month or so.

I plan on buying a few premie sizes and not taking the tags off or washing them. Then that way if we need them they will be there and if we don't, we can return them. For that price though, I would go ahead and buy them ! I have been looking on ebay as well for premie sizes. and like I said if we don't need them there is always someone out there who can !

I did with all my kids. But I had never gone full term with any so mine lived in preemie clothes for a while. My twins were really early so we had a HUGE wardrobe of preemie outfits and when I was done I donated them all to the nicu. They love the donations. So if you don't end up using them you could always just donate them. At that price...I think thats an awesome deal!

so glad you posted about this! I was wondering the same thing... I think I will have like 2 outfits each on hand and some diapers but hopefully I won't need them!

We had only one preemie outfit (per child) -- a gift from a friend. It would have been nice to have a few more, since the girls were swimming in newborn sizes for about the first 3-4 weeks (and they were 6 lbs each at birth). We didn't literally NEED them, but sometimes wished we had them.

what about premmie diapers? My mom just sent me about 300 premmie diapers that I wonder if I will even use. They are pampers swaddlers...anyone use these?

Thanks for the suggestions!! I think I'll get one pack of white l/s onesies and one pack of colors, and maybe the 2 sleeper set for $10, because it was so cute! I won't go overboard, but I'll have *something* in case they do come early. Also, the preemie size on the pack said 'up to 7 lbs'.

As far as diapers, I have no idea! Thats a good question too. We were just going to stock up (when there is a good sale) on 1's and 2's since most people like to give NB size at showers anyway. Also I seem to remember my son being in 1's and 2's longer than he was in the NB size. I think I'll may grab one small pack of preemie size, just to have, as the time gets closer.

I have no idea, but I'm not sure you will need 300 preemie size though, is there a way you could exchange them for NB's or size 1's?

I will most likely use what I use then donate the remainders to the NICU or someplace.

Are the BBRU premmie stuff online? I am going to go check...but wanted to know ifyou found them at your local store...

Preemie diapers don't hold that much and you end up with lots of leaks! Even when mine were in preemie clothes we went to newborn diapers because of leaks. When my twins moved up to preemie diapers (from the wee-pees) we stayed in them till about 5-6lbs...
