Just a question i was thinking of......how do you burp your babies after they have a feed?

some people hold them with one hand under the babies neck and pat their back with the other hand. like this

some lay the baby on their chest and pat their back like this

some dont like patting the backs (i've heard it produces more wind) and like to just rub the babies back.

    how do you do it?

and also at what age do you plan on stopping burping after feeds.

with the twins i stopped when they could sit up by themselfs, at about 7-8 months old.

I burped them every which way! I stopped burping when they started sitting up after they would eat, which for Emma was around 6 months, and Jake around 7 months. We had terrible reflux though, so burping was very important.

When they were really little and had no neck support we did the under the neck one. Now we just put them on our shoulder and burp them - a few pats and a few rubs of the back. I find though that my babes are really easy burpers and just the action of sitting them up causes the burp. Also, I know some people who lay their babies across their legs facing down and burp that way.

When I was burping them I was burping them by sitting up and my hand by their neck, your first picture. It seemed to work better for my ds who had bad reflux. That way he had less spit up. And did it for dd out of habit. We stopped at around five months since they wouldn't burp anymore, no matter how much I tried! :p

Piper had very bad reflux, we had to give her a bath every morning and dressing her was **** as she would vomit over her clothes every feed. burping was very important for her.

My boys had reflux so we rubbed their back rather than patted it. What we actually did was started low and pushed up on their back and they burped well that way. We mosty sat them on our lap similar to the first picture. I dont burb them anymore. Often when they are done eating and roll on the floor, they burb on their own.

When they were small and very floppy I sat them on my lap and held their necks like the first option you listed, and that seemed to work well. Now we hold them up over our shoulders, which happens to be the way both boys prefer to be held anyway.

    All of the above.

We did it all different ways. Whatever we had to do to get them to burp. sometimes over the shoulder, sometimes chin resting on hand with baby sitting and tilting forward, sometimes we had to pat and sometimes rub.

I still burp. I balance them on my knee and jiggle them. I burped my niece like on Easter day. Her mom was so impressed that it only took me a couple of bounces, normally it takes her 5+ minutes . :) Maybe not the best thing for reflux-y babies though.

  10. I rest them on my chest, like the second example.

We burped them both ways, but I'd say holding them around the chest more often, like the first picture. I don't remember if one was more effective than the other. We probably stopped burping around 5-6 months...once they could sit up.
