Burning sensation under right ribs?

Have any of you ladies had a strong burning sensation under your right ribs (in the indentation below your bottom rib, but above the belly bump)? I have had this pain for nearly a week. I bought a maternity support belt thinking it was over stretching due to my rapid growth. That hasn't stopped the burning. I also told my OBGYN, who said it wasn't anything to worry about. However, this REALLY HURTS. It doesn't feel like other ligament pain I have had because no matter how I change positions, the burn is still here. Last night, when DH was rubbing my belly, his fingers grazed the spot and I was lit up with pain. Nothing is bulging out, so I don't think it is a hernia. It feels better when I put a cold compress on it, but when the compress warms, the pain comes back. It tingles, much like when I had nerve damage in my foot when it got smashed a few years ago - thankfully, no such trauma has befallen my side. Any ideas on what this might be or who else I could ask? Should I call my regular physician to see if he has any other ideas. My OBGYN is great and I trust her judgment, but I wonder if maybe I am just not describing this right. I don't want to keep calling her for the same issue.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

  2. My best guess is what you're having is actually a minor form of nerve damage. I had something similar with both of my earlier pregnancies, and am just waiting for it this time. As your belly grows and your ribs start to expand outwards, it actually disrupts the nerves that run across your belly. For me, this presented both times right below my sternum - it started out as an intense burning, and eventually turned fully numb in the center, with the burning sort of radiating out from there. It goes away (or did both times for me) maybe 2-3 months or so after birth? I can't remember exactly how long, but it's definitely not right away.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any remedy - it's very uncomfortable, but nothing to really 'worry' about, in that it just sort of is what it is. I can't say for sure that's what you have, but it sounds like my experience.

See this is why I absolutley love this website! I get the same exact thing. I am 30 weeks tommorw and I have been having this issue since about 22 weeks. Needless to say it does not get any better but I have figured out ways to help it. I get a buring sensation under my right boob, bra line, where my ribs are just on that one side. I thought it was my bra at first but then even when I dont wear a bra or even have nothing on it just randomly occurs. But did help a lil to where sports bras instead of tight underwire. would still get the buring and hurting but not as often if i were wearing a tight under bra all day. I went and bought seemless sports bras they are great. It starts to hurt the burns and then normally just goes numb but the pain is still there.
I asked my OB doctor about it and she just said because everything is stretching and ligaments and she kind of explained it to me like a sprained ankle. She reassured me that it was common and that It was not of any issue. Just to make sure I asked my HIGH risk doctor as well baout it and he said the same thing.
So although it hurts there is nothing we can do about it but atleast we know its not an issue! But what I have found works it cold compresses as well! I will literally take the water bottle that I am drinking when I am at work and put it in my shirt/ bottom of my sports bra so it stays up right there where my ribs are and it almost immedietly relives all of the pain. but somtimes the pain is so strong it does not relieve all of it. If I lay on that side it hurts as well but if I lay on the oppisite side of where it hurts with a cold compress it helps as well!
Hope it starts to feel better soon!!

Thanks for the insight, ladies. Glad to know others are feeling the burn and that it is "normal."

Yes!! I had the EXACT same thing in the EXACT same spot. It was horrible, and I slept on ice packs-I actually think mine was a dislocated rib.
I am so sorry you are going through this, I really feel your pain!

I had something similar - but around my injection site. I ended up getting a cortozone cream with pain relief along with the ice packs and that seemed to help. Second question I have are you taking any type of decongestant? I caught a cold and was and when I weaned off that - the burning seemed to finally go away.

    Good Luck!

I had the same thing during my pregnancy - my doc said it was normal and likely due to my ribs expanding. It has been five months since my girls were born and the spot is still tender and sore when I touch it.

Hi, I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone! (But sorry for you!) I have been having the exact same pain for a little over a week. Originally it was in my right ribs above my liver and wrapped around to my back, now it has shifted slightly so it is more in the middle of my ribcage at my bra line. I feel like it's better when I am moving a lot, like swimming, I've been wearing a support belt which I think helps, warm baths help too! Good luck! Anne.

I had the same pain with the duo. Under my right side (I attributed it more to Zachary having his head shoved in my rib cage).

Ice packs and sometimes heat helped more than the ice. It was totally gone after they were born, and has never bothered me again, but there were moments while pg that I couldn't even WALK it hurt so bad. I was crying many a time.......
