My twins will be 5 in January, and we're expecting another baby in February. The baby will be in our room for a while, but will eventually need to go into the boys' room. They have twin beds that can be bunked. DH think we can bunk them next summer or fall when we have to set the crib up. I think we'll just try to squeeze it all in one room for a while.

Right now, at 4 1/2, and know they're not ready for bunk beds. But maybe next year? Or more like 7 or 8?

My boys moved to the bunk beds at about 5 1/2 and did fine. I know that many people recommend to wait much longer, but my guys don't get up at night , so it worked OK for them.

I got bunk beds for my two in February, so they were 5 1/2 and they do well on them. Connor sleeps better on the top bunk than he did in a toddler bed.

our boys got bunk beds for christmas 3 years ago. they had just turned 5 the nov. before. i've heard they are not recommended before 6, but g & o did great with them. we told them that if we caught them on the ladder for any reason other than going to the top bunk, jumping off the top or climbing the bunk beds that we would take them apart & they would have to have plain old twin beds & not as much room to play & they listened to us.

the only draw back has been that making the top bunk is a huge pain. they make their own beds now & i let it slide that g's never looks right (he's on top) because i know how very hard it was to make it myself when i had to do it.

My boys are 5 and even the thought scares me! Manufacturers recommend 8 yrs old. . . I tend to agree.

I believe the manufacturer says six or so. But, this could be to cover liability too.
We just moved our two into bunks but the mattress on the top is at my chest level. Higher then some of the lofts out there but lower than many of the bunks. This and my son that sleeps up top, sleeps like the dead. He almost never wakes up in the night and hardly moves at all. Now my other son, I would not think of putting him up there. He never stops moving. We often go in to check soley to find out what position he is sleeping in tonight. Rarely is it "normal" or where he started off at. Oh and they turn five at the end of this month

We'll be bunking our boys' beds this summer so DH can build a desk in their room in preparation for 2nd grade homework. They are 7.

I know you said you already have the beds, but there are some other options as well if you wanted to (or had the money) to get something different.
Trundles are one option, then during the day you can slide it under the other be so there is some floor space. There are also trundles with a midheight (captin's) bed that is only like 4 ft. off the floor. Our plan is to do one of those with a wheeled trundle (just above the floor) in an L shape. That's really nice, but totally not an option. For one, its way more then we can afford to spend, and second, we do already have twin beds that convert to bunk beds with the matching dressers. DH and I talked about it and we'll just sqeeze the 3 beds in there temporarily, until we more or until the boys are mature enough for bunk beds.

That was just a good pic, you can find cheaper, but it's still spending money.
If you feel like it's too tight, how about a matress on the floor for the time that can be slid under or pratially under during the day?

(my girls still sleep in one twin at the moment, but have always slept together.)

My boys have been in bunk beds since they were 4. It is not for everyone, but they were ready.
