We are planning to transition to big kid beds in around December. T & Charli will be about 2.5 around this time. We have been talking about BKB for a while and had determined we would get two regular twin size beds for them and they would room together until the baby in my tummy is old enough to have a roommate.

We were driving through the neighborhood last week and saw what appeared to be a bed frame at a garage sale. Turns out it was the frame for a toddler bunk bed. I think it's about 4 feet from the top bunk to the ground. There is a ladder and a bed rail for the top bunk as well.

Now I am wondering if this is such a good idea. Do any of you have bunk beds for your kids? If so, any words of wisdom? Should we just give it away and buy the twin beds like we originally intended?

    TIA!!

I've never heard of a toddler bunk bed. I seriously thought children had to be 5 or 6 to go in a bunk bed, any bunk bed. I don't know. I'd check into the safety factor and the laws in your area regarding that.

Yeah, I think I might pass, especially since it's at a garage sale, don't know how safe it would be. We bought a bunk bed set but set them up as separate twin beds until they are older.

I have 2.5 year olds currently and there is NO way I would trust them in a bunk bed. Way too dangerous IMO. I would stick with the toddler beds on the floor.

I would not do a bunkbed for 2.5 year olds. I think more like 6 or 7 at the earliest.

My 7 year old niece just got a bunkbed and my DD's were climbing all over the thing. It would be all fun and games (and probably some falls) if they had one in their bedroom.

I guess it'd be one thing if you lived in a one bedroom efficiency apartment, needed the space, and would always be in the same room to watch them... but I know there's no way mine are anywhere near old enough for me to leave them in their room with something like that. But then again, maybe you have perfect angels and they'd sleep beautifully!! (Though if you do, you're going to have to come to my house and teach me how you did it!!!) :D

They do sleep but I wouldn't say beautifully...It seemed like a good idea at the time. I guess we will get the two twin beds like we originally intended. DH is not pleased about "wasting" $45 but I guess we can keep the frame somewhere else until they are older. Ugh, talk about an impulse buy!

Another idea is to get a bunk bed that can be taken apart into two twin beds. That way you can keep them both down on the ground for now, but when they are a bit older, you can bunk them. It will be fun for them and give you more space as they grow.

I would never have done bunk beds for 2.5 year olds. I can't imagine my 3.5 year olds being in bunk beds now. I would not feel comfortable with that.

In my limited experience the transition to "big kid beds" is accompanied by frequent falls no matter how beautifully they sleep. And then comes night training, they need to pop up and go potty without help and without turning on the lights.

I am interested in the idea of the type of beds that are later able to be stacked. Does anyone know where I can find this type of bed? I have only looked to see what Ikea has to offer so far.

Also, is anyone just doing a bed frame, box spring and mattress? Do they really need a head board?

    Thanks again,

Many bunk beds disassemble for use as two twins, I'd check and see if yours did. At 3.25 my kids are allowed to play in the bunk beds (grandmas house & camper), but aren't allowed to sleep in them. I carry a scar on my chin and a good ER story from my first night sleeping in the top bunk...and I was 9. I would love to get the boys bunk beds to save on space, but won't assemble them bunked until they are 5 or 6. JMO.

    ETA:
These are the ones at Gmas house (you can see the smaller thumbnail on the right w/o the loft set up). They are easily used either bunked or unbunked. I would expect that most bunk beds you encounter out there are capable of being used as twins as well. Just ask.

You can find them everywhere. Hereare some a Walmart. I had these as a kid and my sister and I used them until I moved out after college. They were great. We often rearranged our room and bunked and unbunked them. At one time, we even pushed them together for one big bed. This is what I eventually want to get my kids. It will work great because there isn't room for two twin beds in their room, but they are b/g and will eventually split up. So, while they are together, they can bunk and then we can take them down when we separate them.

Also, I slept on the top bunk and can remember falling off a few times. But, I had old-school bunk beds with no rails at all. Now, all of them have rails.

This is what my 5 yr old has. I think headboards are really just decorative, not functional. We just went with that when we were ready to move her out of her crib- it wouldn't have matched her dresser anyway. In a couple years when we're ready to re-do her room in to a "big girl room" we'll let her pick out a matching bedroom suite.

I just purchesed bunk beds for my 3.5 year old twins and when they were delivered and put up it scared me how huge the bed was!!! I took them apart theat same night, but the beds are still pretty far of the floor but they havent fell out of them! I wouldnt use a bunk bed from a grage sale. I remember reading a couple of years ago about twins that were sleeping in a bunk bed and the top bunk collaped on the little girl and she died and no one knew the bed had fallen even her brother!

I have one mattress and box springs on the floor without the frame and I think that the sheets would stay on better and look better with the frame and head board. That's just me!

Why don't you Re-Sell the bunks instead of wasting the $$
