Bump on neck from turning head one way?

We have an appointment with the peditrician for Monday, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. Our daughter has consistently turned her head to the left when laying in the crib or bassinet since we brought them home 3 weeks ago. DH and I did not notice she was doing this until we noticed a bump on the right side of her neck yesterday. It is like a muscle knot, like when you strain to one side you get that bulge on the opposite side of your neck. We figure it is from her constantly laying the same way. We have massaged it and it doesn't seem to bother her, but it just looks painful.

The nurse suggested propping her so she lays with her head facing the other direction throughout the weekend until our appointment. I was just wondering if anyone else had dealt with this? Is it common? My mom wants me to take her to our chiropractor, but DH wants to wait until we see the peditrician on Monday.

The only thing I can think of off hand is an infected lymphnode. My dd had one when she was 8 months old. Its good that she is seeing the pedi on monday .. I'm sure they'll be able to diagnos it and get her on her way to recovery. :)

I never thought of anything like that. I'm glad I made the ped. appointment. Thanks for the reply.

Hey...This thread is kind of buried away now, but I thought I would post. It sounds like torticollis to me. What did the pediatrician say?

I'd like to know also. My first thought was also torticollis. That seems to be so common in twins.

My 1st thought was toroticollis, seeing the pedi 1st is good, then if it is that you can also see the chiropractor. Keep us updated.

The ped. sent us for an ultrasound and they determined it was a bracial (spelling?) cyst. She also has very tight muscles from turning her head one way. The cyst should go away over time, but they are going to monitor the size over the next year. As for the muscle tightness they have me doing stretching exercises with her and going to the chiropractor for the next few weeks.

I'm glad we took her to check it out because I was worried sick it was something worse. The ped. said this is very common with newborns. It kills me how many things get labeled "common". However I never seem to hear about them until we are experience them, so how common is that?

Oh wow, I haven't heard of that. I am glad they figured out what it was and that it should resolve on it's own!

My son had the same type of lump on his neck. We noticed it a few weeks after we brought him home from the hospital.
Luckily, we had a wonderful pedi and he sent us to Texas Children's to get it checked out where they did and ultrasound. He was diagnosed with Fibromatosis coli, which is basically torticollis. From what I was told, the lump that our baby had was due to his position inside of me causing a lump of muscle to form from him being in the same position, whereas torticollis is usually caused from babies favoring one side to another in the car seat, sleeping, etc. Anyway, we treated the lump with a few months of physical therapy (twice a week) and the lump eventually went away. YEAH!! However, my son is once again tilting his neck back in the same direction so we will be going back to therapy.

Keep up with the exercises, and if you don't happen to see the lump going down, I would ask your pedi to see a physical therapist.

    Good luck!

My DD was the same way, always sleeping on her left side . I didn't notice it until she was 2 months old and the doctor said she was getting a flat spot on her head. (She didn't have a lump.) Her doctor said it's important that she sleep sometimes on her right, sometimes on her left, so her head would grow evenly. At the time it was very difficult to get her to sleep on the right side, but I think her neck muscles gradually loosened up and now that she's 5 months old she doesn't mind sleeping on her right side. Her head is evening out and looks normal now.
