Bryce has bronchiolitis (sp) - worried about RSV

Bryce started coughing really bad and wheezing last night, and it just got way worse this morning, so we took him to the pedi. I'm amazed at how fast an interimittent cough a couple days ago led to this in NO TIME FLAT. Luckily, his oxygen saturation was at 98%, but he definitely is wheezing and showing some strain when breathing in his diaphram and was diagnosed with a bronchial virus. His mood has actually been really good, so that is a positive, but the pedi said in the next day or two he'll probably get worse before getting better in the next week or two.

He got a nebulizer treatment at the pedi's and it seemed to help him actually, so they prescribed Albuterol (sp?) every 4 hours and told us to just keep a close eye on him.

I'm terrified my baby boy is going to come down with full blown RSV. Not to mention the fact that Chloe likes to take his binkie from his mouth and suck on it, so now she'll probably end up with the same virus he has. She just got out of the hospital a couple weeks ago due to surgery for a blockage in her kidney.

Keep our little bubba in your thoughts/prayers that it doesn't get more serious and require hospitalization.

    Praying.

We went through this in August and September this year. Both girls had it and we were nebbing them around the clock, it seems. Since then, every virus they get has sent us to the ER in the middle of the night (oxygen was at 95% at our last visit). They've been on prednisone treatments 2x already.

This isn't to scare you - only to let you know that help is available and that it is so important to stay on top of it. We knew the signs because our 3 year old started down this road in May 2006. The allergist changed his medication and now things are managed much better. I have an appointment to see him next week with the twins to better manage theirs.

Both of my girls have bronchyalitis - no idea how to spell that! Anyways, Bella got it first, then I got sick, and now Josie has it. The doc gave them an antibiotic, just in case it's bacterial and not viral. And some oral steroids. Bella got sick on Sunday, and she's definitely turned the corner and looks better today. Josie just got sick yesterday, so I know she's going to get worse before better. Just hang in there!

I had to take Sam to the pedi yesterday for the same thing. They gave him a dose of steroids and a breathing treatment at the office and sent us home with a nebulizer and a 5 day script for the steroids. There is not really anything you can do for a virus, which RSV is, and basically you are already giving the treatment for RSV (the treatments and steriods to keep air passages open), so I wouldn't worry too much about contracting RSV. Just keep a close eye on him, and if the wheezing gets worse or breathing seems more labored as if the nebulizer isn't doing the job then get to the ER. But I'm sure you are doing just what needs to be done now! Hope our little ones are feeling better soon! Take care!

My seven year old came home with this and everyone including the babies got it, they were only 2 months old. It was so scary, they had an awful cough for a couple of weeks. We took them to the ER because it sounded so bad, they didnt give us any medications to take home, just a nebulizer treatment at the hospital and some steroids. We didnt get any sleep for a few nights because we were so scared to let them sleep in their beds, they either slept with us or in their bouncers.

They also swabbed their throats for RSV (came back negative), so I assume that you cant get it unless your come in contact with the RSV virus.

I hope your little ones recover fast, [IMG]
