Hey y'all, so I have a doctors appt this morning with my GP but I definitely have bronchitis. I seem to get it every summer. Anyway normally they put me on Tussinex for the cough but I doubt I can take that since it has hydrocodone in it. I feel bad for the babies with all of my coughing.

Has anyone had bronchitis during their pregnancy? If so other than antibiotics what did you take for the painful cough?

I wonder if you can take Delsym?

I've been on antibiotics for sinus infections with my last two or three pregnancies. There are antibiotics you can take. I want to think I was hacking pretty good with one infection but it wasn't as severe as bronchitis. I hope you feel better!

Becca, im going to ask about the delsym, I've taken that before when I've had a bad cold and I think once when I had bronchitis and I was working (hacking during court just isn't the best thing and the judge scowls at you). Anyway I remember it working pretty well, so we'll see.

Dark chocolate, the darker the better. Seriously. I got bronchitis when I was pregnant the last time and didn't want to take any of the class C cough meds. I think it was Delsym that I tried (is that the only class B one?) and it was so nasty I could hardly get it down. I was researching about it and came across a study that showed that there's something called theobromine in dark chocolate that is a better cough suppressant than even cough syrup with codeine in it. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine in it, but I don't care for the really dark, bitter, 80% stuff, so I usually just grab a dark Hershey's bar (which does a fairly decent job) and eat it a little at a time... maybe 2-3 squares to start and then another every 45 min to hour. It is important to know that milk chocolate has almost no theobromine in it at all. It does need to be dark. The original study I read about wasn't very big and I don't know if more extensive studies have been done. But I can tell you from personal experience over the last almost 4, it works for my family. It also has worked for quite a few friends and acquaintances. One lady whose granddaughter was in my son's swimming class, crocheted me a gift after I told her about it, because it worked so well for her. If there's something like bronchitis that's causing the cough, dark chocolate won't cure you, and maybe not even stop the coughing all together (though it's always greatly reduced it for me). I still needed the inhaler to get my body to heal. But at least I could get some decent rest and not have to suffer with such terrible coughing all the time.

I had terrible bronchitis with my older dd's pregnancy, I went through 2 rounds of antibiotics, inhalers, and prescription cough meds to get rid of it. I was more concerned that my awful breathing was going to restrict her oxygen flow so I was willing to risk the meds for it.

I agree with trying the dark chocolate, but I had another horrible round of bronchitis this spring (again, 2 rounds of meds for it), and the dark chocolate helped a little (the hershey's dark bars), but not enough. You can also try a big old spoonful of honey, that actually helped me, I'd take cough meds before bed then a spoonful of honey, which worked instantly until the cough meds kicked in.

I went back to the doc.as a follow up and he didnt change a thing however, im not feeling any better! :( im wondering if I should just wait till.wednesday when I have my ob appt.

I wish I could try the dark chocolate thing but I guess im weird and it triggers a massive migraine for me ... Id rather deal with this than a migraine since I'm so limited in what I can take ... Yay me! Lol

Yeah, a migraine isn't worth it! Have you tried straight honey like Danielle mentioned? I'm in the middle of some yucky thing and started a coughing fit a couple nights ago when I didn't have any chocolate or cough drops. I'd read this not long before so went and got my honey out and it seemed to help some.
